I'm not exactly sure where SR-509 North, Marine View Drive is. Can you get me a satt. image or maybe one of the addresses? I'd really like to UE the BPOE building, but I hear security is tight... Speaking of which-- the Pythian Temple, I've been doing some reasearch on it. Apparently theres a mummy inside. See, the Pythians are some kind of secret society similar to Masons, I dont know much about them but I do know that the Pythian Temple (PT) is under tight security (cameras, guards, motion detectors, etc.). It should be an elongated rectangular building with three stories. From what my friends have told me about it, the mummy is on the third floor. I would say that this might have a significantly considerable risk to reward ratio, and might be worth the trouble. I'm trying to get a group together for UE, if anyone in the Tacoma area is interested, let me know. I'm still new at this, but I've been doing a lot of research.

SR509: Directions: on either direction on I-5, take the I-705 exit. The first exit on 705 is SR-509/S. 21st street. turning RIGHT will dump you onto that freeway, where it continues through the port before becoming a four-lane street (Marine View Dr.).
Or you can just go East on S. 21st until you just happen to drive onto 509!

The abandoned houses are a little further around the bend, past the intersection with E. 11th. (Though be careful: not all are abandoned! the ones that are abandoned are obvious.)

by the way, the Pythians temple is NOT abandoned...I suppose if you ask nicely, they might show you the mummy!

OH! and in other news!
Anyone remember the Luzon building on. Pacific and S. 15th, across from Park Plaza South and Wells Fargo Plaza? Construction has begun! I forgot the name of the company working on it, but I'm excited to see what will happen.
Last time I was at the north end of downtown, I passed some Tacoma Power linemen working inside the Elks building, so there might be a future there soon!

And lastly: CityArts magazine has a double-spread of photos of downtown from the 1980s following the razing of entire city blocks and mass abandonment of almost everything except the highrises. (I grew up around there in the early 90s and man, it's changed big time!)

Alright, thanks Takkun! My uncle says when he was a kid these creepy old people from the PT let him see the mummy. I dont know if theres much chance that they'll let me see it though, much less photograph it. I wonder how heavily guarded it is? ^^ I'll be careful about the abandoned houses. Do you think some of those buildings from the 80's that got abandoned are still abandoned, or do you think they got bulldozed?

I wish you good luck!
I have a few days off this week so I might do some scouting at those houses.

And as for those buildings downtown....well, just take a walk along Pacific Ave. and you'll see what I mean! There are a few vacant midrises around there, but WOW. downtown's changed.

Wow, those pics are awesome. I'm son spring break this week so I'll likely be doing some scouting as well. Though there are a lot of abandoned houses near where I live, I'm not interested in them because, for one, they were previously meth labs, and two, they might still be occupied by a few homeless residents, and I'd rather not intrude on them.
