Mid Atlantic animal encounters

A few months ago i was exploring a hospital by my house with my crew and we decided to go as far up as we could. After searching for about 15 minutes we made our way to an elevator ( i guess it was a terminal of some sort)...mechanical room only to discover a set of stairs going even higher to a 7th floor which mainly consisted of huge machines. We were hanging out taking a few pictures and finding our wy around when we heard this high pitched chirping sound which scared the shit out of all of us (enough to send one of my friends screaming down the hallway yelling "bats ahhhh"). The two of us who actually stayed up there despite being scared shitless found a birds nest up in some rafters - we had woken them up with our lights. Oddly enough, the same night we were on the other side of the hospital's campus and got dive bombed by a bat the entire time we were exploring.

Another random animal encounter happened in another hospital. We stumbled upon a building that was completely overgrown with trees; we had walked right by it atleast 10 times, but never spotted it. We decided to explore it, but immediately upon entering smelt the most heinous smell that i've ever smelled. We put on some masks and bandanas and just kept exploring (because we're hardcore like that). We move up to the second floor and the smell was getting worse, it was like nothing i had ever smelled but i thought i was possibly a rusty, plumbing problem smell. I followed it to a room and based on the lay out of the rest of the building, figured it would be a bathroom. I opened the slightly cracked door non-chalantly to find a humongous white turkey vulture hissing and growling at me. It wasn't a bathroom, but a closet and the thing was probably about 2 feet away from me. I had no idea that turkey vultures could even growl like that. I took a few steps back and bolted out of the room. I realized that the turkey vulture probably had a dead animal that it was eating and thats what the smell was, but seriously, i've never been so scared of a bird - hell, ive never been so scared, ever! To this day i hesitate while opening doors.

The seventh floor of an abandoned hospital in the Baltimore area? 3 possibilities here.
1) You can't count
2) I can't count
3) You know something I don't

C'mon man. PM me a hint. Just a little one.

uhh, guys? i could be wrong, but his location says "highland", not highlandtown. i know of two cities named highland in md, and i can only assume, even though i tend to be horribly wrong when i assume things, that it's the one near frederick. and since frederick is a pretty old town, there would have to be old buildings, some of which are likely abandoned, close by...

-tarr

but yeah, whatever, pm me with a hint, i love a good challenge...

just to get back on topic,
a week ago my friend and i were in the tenneessee brewery and kept hearing what we first thought was a baby crying. after the initial shock of the sound, we came to our senses and went looking. we finally found a tiny closet with a safe like door that was open about three inches. inside was a newborn kitten, screaming it's head off. we left it and explored the rest of the building hoping the mother was nearby. the next night i went back and found the kitten had been moved to a completely new part of the building, so i know for sure it was being cared for. it was one of those things that makes you go "awww... "

the coolest thing i have ever seen was at the metro general in nashville. after leaving the building(s), we were headed back to the cars and saw a huge hawk floating on an updraft from the river bluff right behind the building. he was just hovering there about eight feet off the ground for several minutes, you could have almost just walked over and touched him.

sorry you guys. Technically it was 4 plus basement (5) then we went up to a tower type place with two sets of short stacked stairs.(7) I call that 7 because it sounds more impressive. I wasn't trying to make up shit. Most of you have probably been there...maybe not up to the tip top though.

Did you have to go through a hole in the wall to get to the stairs to the very top?

On Sunday, Sara and I were on the roof of one of the prison buildings while two hawks were flying and dipping around these massive power lines a couple hundred yards in the distance. I think they were red-tail hawks, which we seem to have a lot of in Tennessee. There's no way I can do them justice in description, but suffice to say I was pretty annoyed that my co-worker was screwing around with my camera at the time.

I think I remember your hawk, though. : )

Turkey buzzards are bad ass animals. They're really big, make cool sounds, and have the ugliest head on the planet. Not to mention there good taste in the eats dept. I watch a pair taking a afternoon break from about ten feet away, and that was close. The female was at first pissy about it, but eventually decided to tolerate my presence. They don't smell so hot even when there isn't carrion around!

Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.

I had a turkey vulture come flying at me in the top floor of a hospital in Georgia. It was a cramped little tower room and I went running back down the stairs.

I doubt one would attack, except maybe to protect a chick. To spite their appearance they are shy, retiring, harmless creatures.

It was in a small room at the very top of the building, I assumed that it had a nest up there.

They are incredibly large with their wings spread. They make a good show of it. Don't think I would want to be in that room!

At a boys school on MD I found well over 100 Turkey Vultures all over the campus, they were not at all shy and definitely not scared of me. also as a defense, they projectile vomit at you, not pleasant; and a scratch or peck from one will almost guarantee you a horrible infection.

Addition - They were not at all aggressive, but rather curious

They seem to like those places if there's trees about. The vomit would be a rude surprise! Never saw that, or smelled it.

The only thing I have ever really seen animal wise......is foxes. That was this past Sunday. They were definitely more scared of us than we were of them.

Zacht123, what hospital are you speaking of?
