| | | I've heard a couple of people talk about how they've used LED headlamps for various purposes, both homemade and commercial ones. Has anybody had any experience using these? If so, did you find them to be better or worse than standard torches & headlamps?

| | | Most aren't as bright as a typical tungsten-powered lamp, but even a single white LED can be bright enough to navigate underground by. My headlamp (I put up a review a while ago) is a single LED unit powered by 2 AA batteries. It's no porta-sun, but it is good enough to do the job. I usually have a 2AA maglite in my pocket when I'm travelling under the light of the headlamp both as a backup and for that little extra light now and then. The biggest advantage of LEDs over tungsten (normal light bulbs) is probably battery life. Smaller lighter batteries can produce good light for a lot longer. I also have an LED keyfob-style light I keep attached to my camera bag. I reviewed it here.

| | | I used my LED/Xenon headlamp today in a drain, the LED's would light up the drain enough to be able to see where you are walking. I just kept it on xenon though, becouse it is nice to be able to see more then 5 ft. ahead of you, and I still get a couple of hours battery life of them. On the way out, my batteries were getting low, and I didnt feel like switching them, so I went back to LED. Better or Worse? It really depends on what you are using them for. I think their battery life is great, and they do light up a close area better then a bulb (wideness of beam, harshness of light)

| | | I said this in another thread a few days ago, but I'll add my experience with LEDs to this one as well. LED headlamps are alright. I've got a 3-LED Petzl "Tikka" headlight that runs off a pair of AAAs. The longevity's great, the brightness isn't. It's alright in a small drain or tunnel. In a large place though it's really only going to help you see where you're putting your feet. This sort of light in my opinion is really only good as a dependable backup. For next year's draining season I'll likely upgrade to a headlamp with a large array of LEDs and a centre-mounted conventional bulb. I'm not sure how anyone can put up with a light that uses just a single diode.

| | | I have Petzl Tikka Plus (wich has four leds, and their brightness is adjustable) and it has worked great for just to see where to step etc, and I have Petzl Duo (belt) for situations that require more light. And backing up with 3D Maglite and Underwater Kinetics 2L (bright and small one, only problem is those expensive camera batteries and very expensive bulbs.). I think Tikka is great for most situations, but if you want to see little bit further, take something more powerful with you also. Headlamps are great as they let you hands free, wich comes useful in small drainages and while climbing etc.

| | | Now I use a petzl duo headlamp (look at the my profile picture) and I really enjoy it! There is no led on this one (but you can buy leds to adapt on it later). But they are 2 different bulbs on it. One with a standard bulb (going up to 30 meters) and it can last up to 10 hours!! Sufficient for a big exploration I think.I usually use this one. The other is a halogen bulb wich is powerful (up to 200 meters!) but the autonomy is smaller : about 3hrs.And with this bulb, you can also zoom. One big thing with that headlamp is that it is weatherproof and you have a spare bulb inside. I costed me about 55 euros (about the same for dollars). For me it a good deal!!

| | | I sort of enjoy creeping along with little light. Using a 2 million candelpower lamp for walking around takes a lot of the fun out of it.

| | | We had a spotlight with while draining yesterday, and it was nice to be able to click it on every once in a while, and see the vastness of the tunnel in front of and behind us, also nice to see if you are coming up on something, but definitly not a neccessity, or something to use all the time. edit: plus it is unfeasable to use a large spotlight as a primary light source, becouse of battery life. Unless you are carrying a big battery with (boo), or are not exploring for long at all (boo), a spotlight is not feasable for continous use. [last edit 11/3/2003 7:35 PM by Macsbug - edited 1 times]
