Well there's the local park... or a fair! Go to a fair! Ride the carousel! Eat cotton candy! I'm sure that's all legal.

Ditto on the cops adding to the fun of an event.

I remember when I went dumpster diving at an SAIC (Government computer and science contractors) facility once. There was a security guard. My party consisted of four guys and two vehicles. We all had a set of FRS radios.

We cruised by the facility and had one vehicle park on the public road outside the parking lot. One man was in the woods behind the facility. One other guy and I were in my car.

When the guard was out of view, I drove in and sandwiched my car between some 18 wheelers in the loading dock area so that it was out of view. My buddy and I proceeded to rummage through the dumpster, loading my car with computer equipment, network gear, and server parts. We got word of the security guard on his way to our location. My friend ran into the woods. I ducked into the dumpster and covered myself with equipment.

Nothing beats hiding under computer parts for 20 mins.

So anyhow, after a little more loading, we got the all clear to leave. Upon exiting, we saw our stakeout vehicle pulled over by the cops in front of the parking lot.

We met up later to divvy up the spoils and the lookout said he had gotten lost (He has a THICK German accent.) and that he had gotten his license 6 months ago and is still learning the area.

Most fun dumpster diving expedition I have gone on EVER.

drains and tunnels can be a great way to start off. more often than not, drains and naturally existing creeks that have been built over are public access. then again the laws may differ from state to state. though it is completely different than doing abandonments, they can be found much easier by using online topo or map/sat searches. the more you get comfortable with those, the better you'll be prepared to avoid detection at riskier sites.
hope that helps.

Are you now, or have you ever been?

I'm gonna have to disagree with the whole cops add more fun thing. I find the most troublesome aspect to ue is the cop/security factor. Less than the thrill aspect, I'm really more into it for the pictures, and there's certainly enough to worry about while wandering about an abandoned facility with loose floors and crumbling ceilings that I don't need the extra "thrill" of a possible arrest.

That being said, however, there really aren't many places worth going that aren't guarded. You get lucky once in a while, but more often than not you have to put up with security of some sort. The best thing to do is research and tons of it. Look up as much info as you can on your selected exploration site. Download Google Earth and print yourself out a satellite map of where you'll be. Drive around a couple of times to see if there's cops/security and what their patterns are. And in the event you get seen or caught, just act innocent. There's nothing worse than some kid dressed all in black with face paint and a walkie talkie holding a pair of industrial wire cutters darting back and forth in front of a chain link fence. Oh, and try not to go in huge groups. The more people, the more likely you are to be seen and/or leave one of your people behind. If you must go with someone, make sure it's a pretty lady. Cops never question a pretty lady.

Yeah, we had talked about that lastnight....I didn't agree at first. However, I am 25 and wouldn't mind avoiding being busted myself. On the other hand, it hasn't stopped me before.

We do have a couple places to go without being busted. However, compared to some of the places you all have been (the UE community).....they might not be that interesting. Tons of abandoned farm houses and things of that nature. Still pretty cool to check out though.

Huge groups are bad, but don't go by yourself, either. The first thing that I do somewhere is figure out a second exit. Anyone sent in would likely go in the same way they (or someone else) saw you go in. Two things that I've always done. It helps, too, if the other person knows about the site already. If there are outside windows, peek out sometimes. If you see a squad car parked outside, go out on the opposite side of the building if you can. A friend of mine was inside somewhere and heard a key in the door closest to him (doubles that were chained together) and still got away, through an exit on a different floor on the other side of the building. Another friend who was with him (glad I wasn't) hid for 45 minutes as he wasn't familiar with the building and also escaped being caught. If you're smart, quick, and clever, you probably won't get caught.

I disagree. Superficial guard security is one thing, but I don't know that I've ever been to a place that had effective security.

I agree with Pembroke, I'd much rather have a place where I can feel free to take pictures from whatever angle and not have to worry about being seen, I'd also like a million dollars and a monkey. All the really interesting places seem to have security, it's just the way it goes. I was exploring Baltimore yesterday and found and amazing silo, but couldn't really get over my apprehension to go in, it must have had something to do with the three cameras and 24 hour security, something I am going to have to get over and get around one of these days!

Breath in, Breath out. Sign Says Keep out.

Well, i don't know of any places in VA, but most 12 - 13 year olds seem to find it pretty easy to break into glenn dale with their spray cans despite a guard who lives directly in the middle of the complex. I would say check out glenn dale. Its in Md though, but it is ridiculously easy to explore.
