Caving/Spelunking

I know this isn't technically UE but it's kind of like an organic draining. Anyone into caving/spelunking?

I've been a couple times. I really love drains and it seems like caves are kind of a natural extension to that but they do require more equipment/money/work etc.

What do you think?

I've always wanted to try it; I know one drainer who spelunks regularly and very much enjoys it, and another who absolutely hates it. It seems like it's certainly different from draining though; when you're draining you're exploring a man-made tunnel with a relatively smooth floor. In a cave you're sometimes basically rock-climbing underground.

Seems like it'd have more in common with mine-exploring than draining really.

I loves me the caves. I used to go a lot, but haven't been in many years, due to job and family, and my caving friends settling down as well.

Caving is what got me interested in draining. An average cave is much cooler then an average drain, but drains are much easier to find. I used to cave a lot in high school, but I don't have the time any more to drive 6 hours or more to find a decent cave...

Caves are very cool. I've run into a bunch hunting for mines, and I'm always ready to stop for a good cave. The Painted Grotto is near me, as are several caves used 10,000 years ago by natives, plus the Fort Stanton Cave system, which leads all the way through a mountain and has a snow white flowing river of hardened calcite.

I'm a freak for underground, so I really have to get into draining.

I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread.

For me, I get much wetter and much dirtier caving than draining. Also, the entrance to one of the caves I visit is 70 yards of 2' [edit: not two inches (Thanks Dowcet). And yes, a royal pain.] metal drainpipe.

Caving is just another form of exploration, personally, I think they are better than drains, and if I found asmany caves as drains, I'd rarely ever drain.

Wow, assuming you mean 2' and not 2", that's still sounds pretty rough!

Yeah, that's kind of how I think, it's just like an extension of exploring in general. I've heard drains described as "urban caves" before and I think caves are usually much cooler but they are hard to find or farther away.

I think you need a lot of equipment too whereas with draining you really just need a flashlight.

I explored a small one about 30 feet long, pretty cool. What love to do a bigger one. Jonsered you lucky dog! I'm so jealous.

Eh... not really. Some caves require ropes and harnesses, but so do some drains. In a lot of limestone caves a helmet can be worthwhile, or else you have to be real careful not to hit your head. Otherwise, its really the same most of the time.

Ben caving for about 12 years now. Caved in IN, KY, TN, GA, AL, WV, ID, WA, ME.I have been involved with surveying, vertical, rescue, and both local and regional conventions.
There is a direct connection to the type of folks who are attracted to both caving and UE.
I love caving. I have gone from a helmetless "spelunker" to a full-out caver.
Our comparisons of spelunkers and cavers are similar to taggers and UEers.
To organized cavers in the US, Spelunkers are five dudes with a bunch of beer sharing one flashlight with no idea what they are doing. Cavers say that "cavers rescue spelunkers"
I have slowed down recently because of my kids but will soon be back at it when they are old enough.
Until then I have been checking out local abandoned sites to hold off the DT's of not caving. It's a pretty good substitution actually.

Caves take on the average temperature of the area that they are in. A cave in New Mexico can be around 65-70 degrees F. You could cave in shorts and a t-shirt. But a cave in southern Indiana will be more like 56-60 requiring thick polypro. In the high elevations of Northern Utah you may need a dry-suit because they are so cold and wet.
Caves can be found in every state in the US, but the northern states, due to the glaciers, don't really have very extensive systems like the southeastern states. (It changed the rock structure to a harder type of rock that resists acidic weathering.)

Gear for caving can range from the simple old clothes, a helmet and three sources of light to full climbing gear & wetsuits.
Just like anything else, it all depends on what cave you're doing.

A few blokes I explore with do both caves and drains. They say they just enjoy the underground, and exploring in general.

If you ever ask Dougo how the cave clan started, he'll tell you it's because actual caving was too expensive so they simply did other underground things - ala mines and drains.

I go caving about every other month or so. It's fun, but I just don't get excited about caves like I do for man-made tunnels.

I've been caving for awhile now. Haven't went much of recent though, been taking a break. It's quite risky as a hobby as I'm sure we're all aware. One of the members of a cave organization I belonged too died in a unexpected collapse underground. About a year later I was on a trip with the club and a piece of ceiling came loose and wedged one of the clubmembers I was with in a tight passage. Essentially that blocked me and 2 other people from getting out as there was no other exit, hence we were trapped by our friend who could have quite possibly died. Luckily, the other group we went with came looking after awhile and together we were able to work and get the stone out that trapped our friend. Luckily it hadn't wedged him in for too long, blood toxicity can be deadly.

Sure it's fun. It's neat seeing mother natures sole creations in a pristine underground environment once and awhile as compared to buildings mother nature is trying to claim back.

A few of my caving pics are posted online here:
http://public.fotk...bandonedpa/caving/

Unfortunately, I lost a GREAT deal of caving photos in a Hard Drive Crash a few years back.

Taught me the importance of backup, over a years worth of trips lost

Oh yeah, Cavers rescue Spelunkers!

AND nothing beats a good vertical caving experience. Ascending and Descending huge drops with awesome equipment rocks. Every now and then I go out and just have fun with my ascenders/descenders and throw a rope over a tree and leap frog up it with my ascender and slowly lower myself back to earth with my descender. Petzl makes some pretty nice equipment!

Caving is cool, and I've done a lot. Unfortunately, unlike UE, it's not a "grab a flashlight and figure it yourself" sort of thing. The national caving organization (in the sates) is the NSS: http://www.caves.org/ Local chapters are called Grottos. Find your local one here: http://www.caves.org/io/grottos.shtml Show up at the monthly meeting, meet some people and get in on a trip.
