A article in The Washington Post on Sunday June 4, 2006 http://www.washing...2006060200343.html discusses St. E's and states the views from the abandoned western campus are awe inspiring. The grounds and abandoned buildings there are pretty difficult to access since the hospital is still active. Apparently the federal government wants to house the Department of Homeland Security and US Coast Guard on the Western Campus and make it even more of a fortress!

Has anyone been there? How difficult is access? Anyone interested in going?

RIP...

It is VERY hard and not recommended.

Yes, I find it inflammatory in nature too.

Agreed. Name change is in order. And don't comment about Rosewood Asylum.

Hey, hows it going. honestly, i couldn't care less what your username is. Maybe you are a fire fighter for all they know...right? Since rosewood just burned down a lot of people are touchy. Anywho...when i first started ue maybe a year and a half ago i tried to scout around at st. e's. All i found were a bunch of hobos and it was pretty difficult. I wouldn't recommend it at all.

Oh gawd, blackhawk... (slaps forehead) bad pun.

Anyhow, no "bums" on the campus, because it is patrolled continuously by multiple department of defense trucks.

No ways into the buildings without someone opening a door for you, because they make sure the place is sealed up TIGHT.

No slap on the wrist if you get caught there, because it's owned by the Dept. of Homeland Security, and trespassing there is a federal offense.

Basically, no going there without permission.

People *have* gotten permission, however, so if you're really interested in the place, start writing letters.

Ladies/Gents - pardon my Editing. . . . .

I have been there a few times in the past months. My camera was not welcome, sadly (YET!)

The present difficulty stems from the agency that will one day own the property: DHS (yes, the USCG now belongs to Homeland Security).

Since the grounds are slated to be converted into a DHS/USCG secure facility they are not allowing any photographic tours (even though 1/2 the buildings are going to be leveled anyway)

I am a military officer and I have been getting a thumbs down for 3 months now.
I never been denied access to any federal facility when in uniform - this place really IS a strange animal.

File a request under the FOIA and see what happens - that is my next step. We routinely have to give tours to legitimately SECRET places and pass classified into to authors and the press.
That may take a while. . . .
I see NO reason why a respectable tax payer cannot visit a NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE that is listed by the DC Preservation League as an URGENT PRIORITY!

The facility is patrolled by private contractors, not DOD police. I have been at this for a while and know the difference. I chatted with one in the guardhouse last week and can vouch that there are MANY cameras (some IR) and they are monitored (albeit by a guy munching chips with his feet up). That's why our friends were so chased on-site.

It is actually owned by GAO for now so the suggestion that DOD trucks are everywhere is kind of silly - I think they were KIAs with orange lights on the roof - not quite sure what you saw? Maybe they called DCPD in when they saw you lurking??

That said, I would not try infiltrating the site for the following reasons:
*Federal Property makes trespass a federal offense.
*Rent-a-Cops do patrol and are reasonably well armed, I can confirm the shotguns comment.
*Rent-a-Cops are poorly trained and trigger happy.
*There are multiple cameras which are monitored.
*The mature trees and foliage is pretty well trimmed by the groundskeeping staff allowing few places to hide.

I plan to get permission and go in the front door - you should too.

-- As a side-note, Rent-a-Cops can and do carry all manner of small arms.
The CIA, DIAC, HSOC, and Pentagon all employ private contract security guards and all of the above carry guns. Wackenhut and Aegis come to mind for the recent negative press they received.

did i hear group trip? should we organize an east coast meetup event based on ST. E's, just for fun times? i'm sure spending the night in jail in South East DC is an absolute hoot.

i still maintain that i am more afraid of the crackheads on the way to the site, than the serious legal threat.

S.E. is no joke. it definitely is not on my things to do list this summer.
