| | Fort Casey Coastal Defense Site - Whidby Island < on 6/5/2006 5:15 PM >
| | | Ok so here are some pic's I took a few years ago at Ft. Casey Coastal Defense site on Whidby Island. This was the sister site to the one that is in Pt. Townsend though Pt. Townsends site is much more delapidated and not as interesting. Ft. Casey was home to several 10" "disapearing" guns, as well as various smaller defense guns, and a mortar launching site. Ft. Casey along with Pt. Townsend essentially protected the mouth to puget sound from any type of unforseen enemy naval attack. Of course these sites were never used in a time of war and eventually shutdown and "mothballed". Ft. Casey is a state park so its publically accessible and quite fun to check out as the site is maintained and looks much like it did while in operation. Here's the pics hope you all enjoy.

| | | Hey thanks for the comment, I need to get out exploring more, especially with my new camera, I realize this site doesn't really count since its publically accessibale, but its still a damn cool place to go to and look around.

| | | Nice shots! Fort Flagler near Port Townsend, another one of the coastal defense forts is worth checking out. It seems to be the most neglected of the forts.

| | | Yeah Fort Flagler is the sister site to this one, though the weapons area at Flagler is in much more disarray, the other buildings are kept up quite nicely. Whidbey Island as a whole has quite a few cool sites, theres another site farther up from this that was another coastal gun site, theres some tunnels and stuff there you can explore, its not as expansive as Casey or Flagler but cool none the less.

| | | Fort Worden also has some neat areas. I had a guide a few years ago take us to some areas that are hidden in the underbrush. One was a long flight of stairs down to a door closed of with a wooden 6X6 beam that had been 1/2 sawed thru. If I had know I probably would have brought something to finish the job.
