A question about manhole covers

Call me a noob or whatever you want...but I have a question about manhole covers in Edmonton...I've been reading "Access All Areas", but Ninjalicious doesn't discuss manhole covers that just read "Telephone"...and there are DOZENS of these all over downtown Edmonton.

Can anyone shed any light on what lies beneath? It is just your average utility tunnel?

99.99% of them are vaults. A very small, often half full of water room.

As someone who works in the Telecom industry, I know Telus takes people in thier vaults VERY seriously. Honestly, the vaults are boring as hell and not worth it. It is possible to cause enormous damage to telcom infrastructure in those vaults.

A tiny percentage may connect to very short util tunnels but there is very little evidence of any signifigant util tunnels in Alberta. I know more about Calgary, none of the util tunnels in Calgary are more than a block long and there are only about 6. They are mostly less than 4 feet tall too.

I have a lead that there may be a decent sized room under a major intersection downtown next to a major substation but the manhole is right in the left turn lane in the middle of the Intersection and I do not think the payoff is worth the risk.

I have seen no maps suggesting otherwise in edmonton.

I have been in some power vaults that are small but kinda nifty but safety hazards are enormous in such a place.

Now a place like Toronto may be a different story but I would not expect those lazy easterners to start popping manholes downtown on pulic streets. Takes a real set of kahones to do such a thing.

We once popped a util manhole outside the mayor's window downtown lowered down a 24 foot ladder and climbed in!

If you ever come to Calgary then email [email protected] and you'll be made welcome, taken to locations and given free accommodation. We'll help save you the $$$ you spend on the flight over here :)

most of the honeycomb telephone manholes contain nothing more than a cable termination and cross connect
