Ive Been Saving up for my firs real Digital camera for ages now and im still not sure whats the best to get... i want somthing i can put on a tripod and take professional looking photos from my Explorations...

This is one of my best pictures with the camera im using at the moment... its a Sony CyberShot 3MP Camera... I broke the flash ages ago so if im in a dark area i need to paint with my flashlight...

That was at a property on the Gold Coast, Australia...

I really need a new camera if i want to get some good looking shots also i need a tripod so i dont get blury, uneven photos...

This gets asked often and the same thing happens every time; people respond with "the best camera is [insert name of camera I'm using]". Best bet is to get a shortlist of good bets together, then go to a good camera shop and try them out. See what feels right in your hands ergonomically. Many of us are getting DSLR's, but there are good P&S fixed-lens cameras as well. Perhaps that is the first question you need to ask yourself. And that will probably be governed by your budget.

If budget's not a problem, I've seen the Canon 20D do some great work. More to your budget might be the Canon Digital Rebel. I don't work much in digital (all I have is a Fuji S3100 for scouting), so my opinions not of the highest quality, but I thought it'd give you a nice place to look.

Today is your way out...

First decide on either a Canon, or Nike. I would stay with one of these. Lens are not interchangeable between brands. Most times you get what you pay for, buy good lenses; they will outlive the camera. I prefer Cannon. What do you want to shoot? Do you need a full frame sensor to capture wide-angle interior shots?

Start google searching, and consider what you want to do, and how much you wish to spend in the next say 2 years on this hobby.

Um, that would be Canon or Nikon. If you're going to be getting a DSLR, the good ones will fall under those 2 brands. I personally prefer Nikon, but that's just me.

The basic Nikon DSLR is the D50. It's a bit less sophisticated than the D70, but it's lighter and has the same resolution, 6.1 megapixels. You can pick one up with a 18-55mm zoom for $649 at B&H online.

The basic Canon DSLR is the Digital Rebel (aka the 300D). It has a slightly larger sensor than the D50 (6.3 vs. 6.1 MP) but the increase in quality is negligible. I've heard that the autofocus is a bit quicker, though, something you may want to consider if you're shooting moving objects. You can pick one up for $549 on the same site, but you'll have to get a lens to go along with it.

The bottom line is: do your homework and choose carefully.

Im not sure about any of this stuff... wide-angled interior shots? Nike? (Nikkon?) DSLR's? good P&S fixed-lens cameras? Fuji S3100? Canon 20D?

Im not sure about brands but Canon seems like a good choice... ill go to a camera store this afternoon and feel one.

Nike? isnt that a brand of sportwear? if you mean Nikkon i would consider buying their cameras because of the quality but they are apparently much more expensive than Canons.

I will be shooting in Drains, Abandoned Buildings at night and during the day, some sports photography and normal stuff like photographign tourist locations while im over in Europe next year...

I've never compared Canon, and Nikon, head to head as far as quality, and features. It would be fun to do though. Each has their own strengths, and weaknesses. I have heard from people at B&H Canon keeps their product due dates, but Nikon never gives accurate projections, and is out of stock frequently. B&H is the largest east photo vendor so that's saying something. The fact that Canon produces their own CMOS chips was another factor the swung my decision, and their fast repair times.

I can say that if you want to catch moving shots in any of the Cannon's a fast lens is critical for optimum autofocus operation; use a f/2.8 or better.

The start is a bitch to finish!

Well seeing that i told my Mum last night and she was actually happy that i had chosen somthing to do with my life (She doesnt know its for fun, but if i can make money from it, so be it!)

I can save up a fair bit of money from work and i can ask for a nice camera for my b'day (in about a month) so it should be good!

Ive been looking up some and the D70s is over $1000!! whats so good about it that makes it so god damned expensive?

Well, first, it's a Nikon.

And second, DSLRs in general don't come cheap. The D70 is a superb camera, in fact, I plan on getting one as soon as i have that exorbitant amount of money. I used to want a D100, but the D70 does everything the D100 can do, only better. Faster autofocus, better metering, better colour reproduction...as much as I hate to say it, if you plan on doing photography for a living, you will have to get a DSLR like the D70 or even the D200 (which i would buy if i didn't need one of my kidneys) or the equivalent Canon models. The D50 isn't a bad starting point...it would be a good camera to learn the ropes on if you're going to be doing photography seriously. I would suggest that whether you choose a Nikon or a Canon, stick with that brand, if only for the reason that if you trade up, you won't have to buy new lenses.

Have you ever shot with a film SLR?

You're kidding. I would go second hand if I were you - I'm looking for a SLR myself, and a second hand D70 body costs $600 the most. And that's in Canadian dollars. Spend the other $500 dollars on a good lens !

From the type of questions you are asking, I get the impression you would be better off with a good quality P&S / Fixed lens digital camera than you would an SLR system. Your questions caste a very wide net, ie. "what do all these lenses do?" A DSLR is a big investment and you seem a long ways off from knowing what the right decision will be in terms of equipment choices (and there are many). Maybe starting off simple will be better?

Yes, and if you for some reason aren't happy with the camera or just can't seem to get a knack for the camera, you won't be out a ton of cash and have mad parents

If you do get a P&S, make sure it has at least some advanced features/manual settings so you'll be able to learn some of the basics that can be put to use when you decide to go DSLR.

Keep it fuzzy.

Well if that's the case you need to set a dollar figure on how much you intend to spend for a body, and lens. Otherwise it very hard to give advise.

Well that put in line for the Rebel, and one stock lens they sell with it. If you could get a used Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM lenses for the Rebel that would work well, it's retail price new is about $580. That combo would give you a good start.
