|  | | | Hi, I'm new here, and I live in McHenry county Il, Pretty much the lame suburbs of Chicago.
There are a few sites around here that me and my crew are working on exploring, but if anyone knows of others, Please let me know!
Here are the few that we know of, I plan on putting up some pictures later.
The Silver Nugget, and abandoned resteraunt on Rt.31
Not sure whats going on with this one, there always seems to be more stuff in it every time we go.
Abandoned RV Dealership, on Rt. 14
Havent been inside yet, planning to soon.
Abandoned house, on Three Oaks Road, south of Rt. 14
Large Victorian style house, some cool architecture.
Toy Factory, off Algonquin Road, In Algonquin.
HUGE! I havent been there to take pictures yet, but my friends have visited it. Very creepy and old.
There are also Several old houses and barns on Rt. 47, just freshly abandoned. Several still contain farm equipment.
Any other locations would be much apreciated!

most of the illinois/indiana folks are here, all very nice people, but be carefull with posting locations on open forums like this. any more specific than what you've already listed is generally frowned upon...unless in a private forum or PM.
back on topic, those all sound like nice places, im from the bartlett/elgin area, so mchenry is a little haul north but not too bad. we should meet up sometime and check out that toy factory at least, that got my motor runnin.

Leo1: You cant just wander around Gary going into old buildings! Theres plenty of crackheads that will bust you in the mouth for that camera, then run a train your ladyfriends.
Me: I like Gary, I think its nice, aside from the lack of eats on a Sunday afternoon.

The odd thing was that the awning above the door was in pristine condition. I should go back now that I've got a decent camera.
Used to eat a lot at the Silver Nugget. Was a pretty cool place when it was open. I'd think there's not much to see there other than the graffiti on the Route 31 bridge.
Additions for your pleasure: Riding the Prairie Trail:
In Crystal Lake, north of 176 there is an active factory with a preserved steam locomotive and passenger car sitting out front. It's a little ways off the trail. FYI that sign does say no trespassing, so ask at the factory's reception desk before poking around.
Sterne's wood's was once the site of a gravel quarry. There's a few foundations and standpipes around there. Not much to see, but fun to hike through the bush.
The region between CL and Algonquin contains active quarrying. There's a few abandoned loaders from when the Prairie Trail was C&NW's right of way. There's also some abandoned bridge abutments, and lots of piles of discarded rail ties. I'm sure there might be some historical junk scattered in with that stuff, but I've been told off by the Meyer Material People for trespassing before, so be careful. Weekends are best because active mining is not going on.

Silver Nugget- Nothing special..I'd say the most interesting thing we found there were the job applications for 3 years ago.
Toy Factory- Definitely a cool place. We keep finding something new everytime we come. I'd highly recommend checking it out. Bunch of small spaces though, got a few bumps on the head.

The other camera we used has a few that turned out well, wich I will put up tomorow.
as for the quarries, we might have to check those out.
The toy factory's interior is very nice on the inside, some nice achitecture, however tons of grafiti and vandalism. The floors on the second story are very weak in some spots, even collapsed. However you can make it safely all the way to the roof, and up part that fell through. Overall, Definately worth a trip.
The only problem is the way in, a small hole in the fence you have to climb under.

i took some pictures inside..and alright there are orbs everywhere. and i heard that 3 people were killed there at one point and thats why it closed..
but does anyone know the history of that place? or know where i can get some information?

If you want to learn more, a good place to start would be these links:
(I tried googling "Algonquin Toy Factory" and a few other things, but I didn't get much)
My best guess would be that the building was originally used as a Dairy. There are a number of loading docks facing the bike trail that once would have served a rail siding. If I can remember correctly, there are two chimneys, one of which might have been used to power boilers for pasteurization. More info below.

Oddly enough, absolutely no mention of the "Toy Factory" or any related disasters. The best I could find were these things (with original grammar):
September 12, 1888 Local factory makes 200 pounds of butter and 300 pounds of Cheese each day.
July 7, 1938 Borden Milk Factory is torn down. It was located near the bike path and north of Jefferson Street.
August 31, 1886 Railroad shipped 37,000 cans of milk from this village.
There is a gap in history between 1916 and the 70's on the "disaster" page. I'm still trying to find some more info, which will also come in handy for my model railroad.

As for a history of the building, I cant find annything, I spent at least 3 hours trying. The only thing i could find is this...

As for new information,
I found out that there is some sort of abandoned factory in woodstock, that use to make lamps or something of the sort. I plan on finding more about that soon.
Also, I was considering a trip out to either vishnu springs or the joliet army ammunitions plant.

if you walk around the fence towards the back, through that park area, there is a path through the woods. the fence is open back there.
Ive been to the quarries/sandpits countless times. its probably some of the most fun Ive ever had in my life. jumping off giant sand cliffs. Never been caught, close a few times, but if you are smart its pretty safe.
anyone ever go to Shireland in Huntley? its an old abandoned amusement park
