Philadelphia, PA: so i got under south street bridge

i got in to where the old gear works are from the 1920's that used to raise the bridge. it's a pretty neat little spot. Unfortunately, my friend and i just happened upon the entrance and I didn't have my camera but I'm planning a return trip, camera in hand, probably tomorrow night if anyone is interested in joining me.

That's sounds interesting, I'm curious to see what it looks like. Do you know what the powered it? There's lots of stuff along the Schuylkill river that are good for pic taking.

Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.

COOL TAARNA! Ha. But seriously, I might be around. Leave me a message with a time.

In the space of a smile I found sleep.

like i said a friend and i were just meandering around when we found an entrance so we were pretty unprepared. i didn't make it this week, but i'm going to try for daylight on monday and see if i can get a few pictures.

there isn't a lot down there and i wasn't able to discern how everything originally ran but it's an interesting spot to be sure.

Oh, cool shit. Some of the best views of the city can be seen from the South Street bridge. At first I thought you were talking about the Ben Franklin. I was threatened to get "locked up" just for attempting to take pics of it.

The door will probably be locked by then, sucks but that seems how things go. Good luck!

Great Find!!

I decided to go a few days ago (I live within five minutes walking distance) and the view really is spectacular, and a great spot to test out my new camera. There is also some cool graffiti along the inner walls.
Just watch out on the stairs, they're a little shaky...

Yea, I'd love to see some pics of this. I'm on 33rd and Arch now, so I might have to take a walk down there and investigate it soon.

Probably from the trolley car company's electricity, 600 volts Direct Current. The bridge last opened
about the time the trolleys stopped running, in 1956. The tracks were removed in 1958, according to
a photograph reprinted recently in the Philadelphia "Inquirer".
