|  | | | Some of you may recall transformer vaults were being talked about in another thread. Well, I explored it myself today.
These are the things you can expect to see:
The room was really hot. There was a light bulb on the ceiling, but switch was nowhere to be found, so I relied solely on my flashlight. You don't want to touch anything in a room like this. The primary side is 4160v between phases and 2400v to the ground and because the room is not meant to be publicly accessible, the connections are not insulated! Touch it and you'll burn.

More like, "not foolish enough to do". Deuterium, you're very lucky. I was talking with my brother last week and found out that he nearly got killed on the job. He works with HVAC (career change) and got grabbed by 600V.
He told me that this was the worst experience he ever had to date especially when he couldn't let go and his legs froze up. Fortunately, the breaker tripped and the dance was cut short. And I'm very relieved to say, he's okay. I was talking to another guy who is an elevator mechanic. He too got grabbed and spent time off work being treated for an irregular heart beat after getting zapped.
Electricity is a wonderful servant worthy of the utmost respect but when you screw with it, it has no mercy!

That's why I don't touch. I just look and take pics. Its hard to tell from pictures, but there was a generous amount of room in front of transformers, so I didn't even need to get that close.

The ground potential gradient around high voltage gear (10KV+) is more than enough to kill you even if you don't touch anything.

Point is it can still fry you like yesterday's bacon... Hell even 12 volts can knock ya ass off if you happened to touch a hand to the voltage source and one to ground with lots of sweat (great conducter of electricity) thrown in for good measure.
Moral of the story: 100 milliamperes (1/10th of an amp} can stop your heart or throw it into fibrillation... Both of which meaning you're gonna die from electric shock

| | | | I've always been under the impression that big transformers are oil-cooled. I think that the PCB (Arochlor) compounds that were once used for this may have been non-flammable or at least fire-resistant but that stuff is obviously not used anymore, at least not for new installations.

When they blow up, they really do just that! Another reason not to play with live installations! Most are now fill with mineral oil. Almost anything including PCBs will burn if the temperature is high enough.
Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.

Electrical equipment vaults can easily be fatally dangerous places. I saw the pictures at the start of this thread and was startled at how easily an unsuspecting person could be killed or seriously injured.
-You do not have to touch anything to be killed. Medium and high voltages have the capability of jumping an air gap. Less than 600 volts generally will not jump an air gap but are almost 100% fatal if contacted (These voltages are not "forgiving" like 120v residential voltages are).
-Even insulated equipment can be fatal if touched. Medium voltage and high voltage connections and busses are frequently insulated but are not normally shielded. The lack of shielding, means very high electrostatic charge can build up on the surface of the tape, insulating boots, etc. This charge can and will kill you! Do not be fooled by something that appears to be insulated and safe.
-Degraded insulation and a less than perfect or degraded grounding system can cause fatally high voltage gradients to exist across surfaces (e.g. a concrete floor) or across two otherwise benign appearing surfaces. In other words, just walking into the room can be fatal. Standing water, wet shoes, non rubber soles are particularly dangerous in these locations.
-PCB's (Polychlorinatedbipheynyls) were once widely used in transformer vaults. It was very rapidly eliminated in almost all applications after 1972 or so when it became recognized how serious a health hazard it is and the cost of maintaining equipment using it went through the stratosphere. Unfortunately, old or abandoned vaults might have leaking equipment containing PCB's. This stuff is a hazard even just getting it on your skin. BTW, even devices such as flourescent light ballasts contained it.
I hope everyone reading this gets the message. Don't fuck around in these vaults!
