I am very interested in going to an abandoned prison in my area. I live in Pendleton, NY (near North Tonawanda, Lockport, Niagara Falls, Buffalo). Could anybody direct me to one? I've done Googlin' and I have pulled up nothin'....

There was an old workhouse in Rochester, but it's Highland Park/ Mary Cariola now. As far as elsewhere in Western NY, I would try focusing on old podunk towns. Lots of infrastucture for a population that's just not present.

Did you even bother reading my post? My sources say: NO

I've done Googlin' and I have pulled up nothin'....

I highly doubt the library would pull up anything.

I have the slightest of feelings that you are making that up. Why go exploring with out a camera? Sure thats fun and all, but if you have a camera document your experience.

I have left my camera at home plenty of times. When you have a camera you think too much about getting good photos.

try the New York State department of corrections... call them and just ask questions as well as of your local historical society.

Best places to start.

Prisons usually are a BITCH to get into. Unless you know someone with the law, or the prison you are going to is so abandoned that all the doors are open, i'd advise against it.

But good luck!

Far as I know, NYS DoC doesn't really abandon prisons like other NYS department do...

Good point though, but I like to document the experience for another forum I go to. Plus I have to ride my bike to some places if its within 15 miles...

Try Attica...pretty easy to get in. Getting out, on the other hand...

When you factor in the fact that prisons are horribly overcrowded. Anything that was once utilized as a prison is. The first state prison was Auburn and that is still open. They have shut some psychiatric facilities and converted them into prisons. I dont think NY will abandon a prison any time soon.

I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence or insanity to everyone..... but they've worked for me

Clegg, I will say this: Besides cops and such on the premisis of old prisons, there are other things to be aware of. Being that prisons were places of torment, punishment, etc...becareful of hauntings. No, I have not been to mushroom mountain, or anyting, or do any dope. I am serious, actually. Many prisons that are abandoned, are indeed haunted, and the spirits are not real nice and friendly. Like Alkatraz...haunted by a dozen evil spirits AND a Demon. The Demon has been back and forth there for a while now ( like 60 years ) and is in cell block: D14. Always the typical signs: noxious oders, red-glowing eyes, deep, angry voices that are disconnected, and they can kill you, unlike most ghosts.

I am not saying don't get into one and share the cool photos. Some disused prisons are just really cool and have some nice shots waiting for us to take. Also, wear a mask..asbestos maybe common.
