Please link to Galleries

Hi Everyone,

I just have a small comment I think is relevant. Most of you post the link to your site's front page, even when the update in question is a single gallery.

For most of you, I personally have bookmarks to all your webpage front pages, and I don't need to go there, and then search around for the right link. Frankly, some pages are so poorly laid out that finding that link is a challenge.

I ask all of you, for my (and I think others' too) sanity, PLEASE link directly to your gallery or update as opposed to your front page.

That's all. Thanks.

I second the notion. It bugs me to have to sort through the site just to find the new stuff. It's not the end of the world if your hit counter isn't kerchinking ahead with new hits all the time.

Bahh.

When I post an update (which I am long overdue for, been too damn lazy) I display it prominently on the main page, only an idiot couldn't see it, so I'm going to keep posting it that way. But I can understand the ones that you have to search for being annoying...

what about when someone goes back and wants to see an update you posted about previously? when they click the link, they end up with the most current update and have to go hunting for it. You should at least go back and modify your old posts with direct links for the benefit of those that read backwards or just joined the foums and are catching up.

In that case, they will probably want to see all the missions, and can easily do so from the missions pages easily found from my main page.

Jester, I find nothing wrong with your page's layount and I find your updates easy to find... but what logical reason is there not to link directly to the gallery? I just don't understand the practice of linking the front page. Plus, the archived post argument has merit too... why force a user to look through your archives if they could just as easily find exaclt what they wanted?

I like to know when there is interest in something (like when a certain update causes a lot of visits), and the counter lets me know better than my psychic powers...

I've laid out my mission pages so that it's pretty easy to find things very quickly, so I'm maintaining the way I do it.

I just don't understand the practice of linking the front page.

When you do that, it registers a hit on Jester's tracking. He likes to see who comes from where.

edit: ...And jester jesters a post in before I hit the button. nice jestering there.

Oh... that's not really an issue for me. I just read the webserver logs generated by Apache.

Do you guys have hosts that allow PHP? I could put together a full-site logging utility for everyone... I was kinda planning on doing that myself. (Apache logs aren't really easy on the eye, I want soemthing more meaningful to humans)

Well, my host says Php4 in it's list of gibberish

I'd be interested in something like that, if it wasn't too complicated, since I am a simpleton

Tux, I'd love it if you would code something to log each page. I have a perl script running on several pages of my site that shows who (IP) visited at what time, but I want something that tells where they came in from. I had a CS guy look at it, but he didn't think perl was capable of getting that kind of info. There was a "referrer" command, but all that did was return the url of the page the script was called from (so the log had bunches of listings showing the page I was trying to track instead of the viewer's previous url.)

Hi,

Personally, I can't put the direct link to the new gallery because all my pages have the same url as my home page....
I'm a beginner in creating website thus....forgive me!
If someone has a good tip for me...

But I think that if your home page is clear and well organized, people will not have problems finding the update. (I always mention in the forum the number of the new gallery, quite easy if you can read numbers....)

titch, your pages have differnt url's, they are just withen a frameset, so you dont see the url in your browser's top bar4 change when you go to different pages in your site. If you look at the source code of your home page, or just look at the borttom bar of your browser when you highlight a link, or right(pc)/control(mac) click a link, and go to "copy link location", you can get it's url.

I find direct links to be better then ones to a home site becouse I often will load up many pages at a time in different browser tabs, and will forget what update I was going to if the link doesnt point directly to it.

Is something like this acceptable to everyone?

http://uem.minimanga.com/?section=referrals

What other information would you want it to display?

At this point, it's a very simple script to set up. You dump three files in a directory, and then put one line of HTML on each page you want monitored. Easy and free.

can it show date/time and IP addr as well? if it did all of that, I would be a happy man.
