University of Cincinnati

I searched and found a map and a few accompanying pictures of the utility tunnels underneath the University of Cincinnati, but they are old and outdated, so I decided to do a little research of my own. So far, I have met a lot of locked doors, however one of these might as well have been made of cardboard. It was labeled a "Fan Room". All I did was take a quick glance, so I'm not sure if it's promising or not.

Anyways, my real question is this: does anyone have any info about this, or is anyone here a student at UC as well?

Ram,

The tunnels of UC are incredibly boring. There is some dangerous places. If I'm right, the "fan room" you found has 2, two hundred horsepower motors in it. There is not much to protect you from them. There are open "pits" in some tunnels. There are places where boiling water is running ankle deep(power plant leaks). How would you explain *THAT* to mom? The bottom of one tunnel is filled with human waste(and who knows what else). The doors are locked for a reason. The police have installed many closed circuit TV's in the tunnels. Best to just find another place to explore...

Have you been in the tunnels, or heard these things? The "Fan Room" is mysteriously quiet, and the fact that the only identification is a Sharpie marker writtin "Fan RM" on the door. There is also a computer running, it looks like it's been on for the last 10 years. I'll have pictures soon if anyone would like to help identify some of the stuff.

Yes, Ive been in every tunnel UC has. The fan room is an air intake for a building. The computer has been running for 15 years :^) You'd better be careful. The cops take a dim view of trespassing in certain tunnels. If the wrong person saw you taking pics of sensitive areas, it could get blown out of proportion.

In theory, you could go from Taft Law to University Hospital via tunnel. But, you wouldn't want to. Human waste, boiling water, construction, etc makes it a very bad walk(or crawl).

To an outsider or an inquisitive type, its fascinating. Its really just the nuts and bolts that make your university a better place for learning... :^)`

Maybe I'll stick to basements and just wandering the hallways of every building, there's plenty of places here to explore that I'm actually allowed to be in

On the other hand, do you (or anyone else here) know of any good areas in or around Cincinnati? I know of the Peters Munitions plant, I grew up a few miles away from it, and have been there before, but nowadays it's locked up pretty tight. Other than that, I haven't been able to come across many places around here.

We've been scouting Newport for a bit now. There are a few bizarre abandoned houses we've staked out, but haven't looked into yet (due to waiting for the school year to end and too many people around on weekend nights). Though we live in Cincinnati, we're finding much more interesting stuff in Newport/Covington...

Just out of curiosity how do you know so much about the tunnels? Your warnings as accurate as they me be, sound like they come from someone who has worked for the engineer's office or in the physical plant. I was wondering if you would be willing to share any of your stories, such as why rivers of sewage or boiling water are allowed to exist if they are common knowledge to the staff. I don't doubt your story I was just genuinely curious.

The personal responsibility train left the station years ago, and you gave it the finger as you watched it leave.

I've never seen nor heard of the UC access tunnels but just as an interesting side note: Paramount's Kings Island (near the cartridge factory the OP mentioned) was partially designed by Roy Disney and features similar designed access tunnels to those the Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom and Epcot use. However, when Paramount Parks purchased Kings Island they ceased use of the tunnels, I never got to see them while working there but I may have some pictures soon as I know the marketing director there. Just kind of an interesting fact...

i have been in a very short section near mcmicken hall, however they have walled off the access to the rest of the tunnels through that entry way. i found a few leads but nothing panned out in the short time i had to search.

i have a map that is inaccurate and really no help.

F this I"m going exploring!

If the map you're talking about is the one I think it is (you found it online rather easily) - it's very old and very innaccurate as of now. Especially after all of the recent construction, renovating TUC, the new Steger Student Life Center, and the new Campus Rec Center, everything underneath UC has changed a lot. Really, most of central campus (all the aforementioned buildings, and all of the engineering complex) has just one huge connecting basement. Most of the buildings are connected above ground anyways, so there's not many true "tunnels".

If you're at UC now, send me a private message. I have a much more up to date, official survey map.
