| | | Could anyone tell me what a bulkhead is? I see it labled some maps of sewers I have been looking at, but I have no clue what it means. Anybody know?

| | | Normally, it means some sort of structural partition, like in a boat or car. This could mean a structural support on the side of the tunnel, or maybe a wall blocking you off.

| | | It's hard to tell what the scale is on this map. A bulkhead can also be an embankment, by the way.

There is nothing visable above ground in that area, part runs under a highway. The scale is about 4 city blocks high X 6-7 blocks wide.

| | | If that part runs under the highway I would assume the bulkhead is just a reinforced section to maintain the extra weight of truck traffic. YOu might not even notice a difference while IN the tunnel but I would assume the walls would be thicker or perhaps some extra archways every 5-10 feet under the highway.

| | | In the Navy, the bulkhead is any wall, partition, whatever on both ship and land. And you can never lean on it, or the Master At Arms (essentially the police officer) will scream at you for an hour. Believe me, I take this from experience.

| | | When pouring concrete, a bulkhead is a temporary form built to the concrete on one level from flowing down to the next level. Unlikely this means anything to drains, though I guess it could indicate a drop in elevation. Caput_58
