| | | Right. There's the numeric IP, aka "dotted quad". Nearly all of these have hostnames and domains - mail.microsoft.com, bsd.redpin.com, or whatever. You can do a reverse lookup and see what hostname(s) a numeric IP resolves to - my implementation of Apache does this automatically, saving the hostname/TLD in the logs instead of the numeric IP.

| | | That's if reverse IP is implemented correctly. I wonder how many gov computers show up as mundane .coms. I've gotten odd hits like everyone else, and even recognized a few government spiders by the way they moved.

| | | I once tagged real big the wall of my school, not with chalk, but spray paint. The maintenance guy had no real proof that I did it, but he was suspicious at me, and told me that having the sandblast team to come and remove the paint really drain the budget. that's it.
You have use chalk... the rain would have removed it, unlike paint. They are only mad. Just keep your mouth shut.

| | | Yea it was chalk and inconspicuous but it still wasn't right :x ::apologises to the UE gods:: Anyway the theory now is that that one maintenence worker was pissed, but everyone else from the physical plant and other branches of the school seems to be enjoying the site, judging by their browsing habits

| | | I sometimes write small, inconspicuous tags in odd corners of steam tunnels or abandoned buildings with a sharpie, usually my "symbol" and anonymous email. I haven't gotten any response from one of those yet, although a visiting Canadian explorer (Stong from UEA) found one of my tags once. When I was a Sophomore in high school a friend and I found a huge abandoned attic space above the art classroom, and since we were stupid 15 year olds and there were art supplies immediately available, we painted some stuff on the ceiling. We signed our real names too (it didn't look like anyone had been or would be there again for years, it was really hard to get into). I keep thinking one day I'm going to get a pissed off call from my high school about that So don't feel too bad Darkism, I think we've all done ill-advised stuff like that (or if not than at least yours isn't the dumbest!) | | | Ueq has put some tags in the places we went, but none that are permanent. Stuff like writing UEQ on tape and sticking it on a pipe or writing it in some dust. I have to admite that sometimes we wonder if somepeople that work at the places we go will find our site. So far so good. You are really unlucky man, just stay low for a while and sooner or later the people will forget. It happened to me and some other UEQ members. We were suspected of entering a building close to our school and some people saw our faces. Luckily we stayed low and people just forgot. [last edit 10/25/2003 1:00 PM by Split - edited 1 times]

| | | I'm with mokonax on this. Leave only footprints. In this case, I doubt very much your school will mount any kind of campaign against you or try to find you (you might lose a few of your entrances though) so I wouldn't really worry about it. Lay low. ...and don't tag anymore. You're askin' for trouble there.

| | | I've put "tags" on a few sites, but they were always ones that could be removed rather easily if one so chose (ie...chalk on cement or metal, writing with marker onto masking tape, or such things like that). I've never had any problems. I figure, if I've tagged somewhere that I shouldn't have (ie, the gestapo doesn't approve), they can very easily remove it if they feel so inclined. Tagging ala permanent (like spraypaint) is just stupid, in my opinion. Kinda funny, but I was doing some snooping around at Brock University, going through some service tunnels (not really steam tunnels, rather tunnels to connect some buildings used as corridors for maintenence staff, etc...), I came across a tag that had somebody's nickname that I recognized from this board (whom would probably want to stay unnamed), with "We know you're here" under it in marker. Kinda makes you wonder who "we" is! A good friend of mine works for a security company that does a site in downtown Toronto that is quite popular with tourists, both UE and otherwise, he tells me that one of the reasons he asked for that site was because he loved going through the steam tunnels, on the roof, in the attics, etc... So I guess not all "authorities" have a problem with it -Ex

| | | I looked your site over more and I still keep my same opinion that your Cult of the Cactus is dumb. Your whole site is dedicated to you guys acting like idiots. All you talk about is you guys having sex, taking drugs and part of it is on phone phreaking. I dont get what the point in phone phreaking is, you pay like a quarter at a telephone booth to talk on the phone. A quarter isnt a big deal. You can put what you want on the internet, I know that but your site is an insult to the internet. When Logik first showed me your site because he found it stupid, I just didnt get what this had anything to do with Ueing and how dumb and pointless it was. That is what I think. You wanted to know. | | | "Cactus" is a prank. You call the person, and you say nothing but "Cactus" no matter what they say, you reply with Cactus. It's a challenge for any thinking feeling person to actually play the prank, and the results are usually hilarious. Try to find some mp3s out there. I know that UEC's mister snee did a series of cactus calls (some of which are really good) but I can't seem to find them on the web at this moment... maybe Asher can point the way...

The Cactus Cult was made as a joke. It was an attempt at a humorous explanation of all the cactus calls. It wasn't meant as a serious "were starting a cult" type thing.
Your whole site is dedicated to you guys acting like idiots. All you talk about is you guys having sex, taking drugs and part of it is on phone phreaking. |
Sure we do the occasional stupid thing. Who doesn't? Now I don't know where the drugs and sex came from because we don't discuss either of those things anywhere on the website. The website was originally supposed to be about "phone phreaking" but theres really little information there.
You can put what you want on the internet, I know that but your site is an insult to the internet. |
Now thats kind of harsh isn't it?
When Logik first showed me your site because he found it stupid, I just didnt get what this had anything to do with Ueing and how dumb and pointless it was. That is what I think. You wanted to know. |
Only the recent exploits have anything to do with UE, the rest really don't. I did want your opinion. What I didn't want was the liberal amount of insults you mixed in. I can't see why we couldn't simply have a normal discussion without all the insult hurling.

| | | UPDATE The Purdue Exploratory Society is ceasing exploration activities indefinitely effective today, October 27, 2003. Thanks to this quick jaunt, we are now being fingered in the theft of chairs from this area. As I peruse the hit logs I can see them looking for photos with people in them, trying to identify us. Obviously we did not steal said chairs, but that is not the issue. We are being hunted and fully intend to stay completely under the radar for as long as it takes. The moral of the story: NEVER LEAVE ANY IDENTIFIABLE MARKS! It turns out that we were discovered thanks to the aforementioned chalk tag on the roof. The site will remain up as long as I feel it safe for it to remain. Thank you guys for everything. I'll still be posting here, just not about any new updates
