| | | Maine UE! < on 4/21/2006 3:53 PM >
| | | Hi all, newbie here. Looking for places around the state to do some UE, I know of very few places. Been to a few in the Bangor area, and a few here in the Portland area but I am unable to post pictures because I have yet to jump into the digital age. I'm still using my old reliable Canon AE-1, and my scanner decided to crap out on me a while back. I'm going to make a trip up to the former Loring Air Force Base in Limestone sometime this summer, but until then, I wanted to check out some sites in the more southern part of the state... or at least one that's not 6 hours away. Is the old Augusta State Hospital (Augusta Mental Health Institute) still around? I saw some pics on here from some months ago, and can't recall seeing any news of renovations or demolition. And though it's still operational, I was able to get some exterior shots of the Bangor State Hospital (Bangor Mental Health Institute/Dorothea Dix Psychiatric Center). Anyone from the area, or that have been to sites in the area, that could be of assistance to me would be greatly appreciated. I also want to get to some places out of state, Northampton (hopefully before they tear it down), Devers State School, Ladd School... the list could go on for a while. At any rate, thanks all! I've very much enjoyed browsing the site, and look forward to contributing.

| | | Welcome, welcome, welcome. I can't really speak for Maine, because my posse hasn't been up that way yet but I know that the UE DB will help out immensely for finding sites to visit. Unfortunately, Northampton State Hospital is now on its last leg for physical life. I can confirm from personal experience that it is no longer worth the effort in trying to get inside. My group (NEUEU) recently tried to re-enter the asylum, only to be met with new plywood on older entrances and an unmarked Northampton police officer in his cruiser. (Shifty bastard appeared out of no where.) If you're interested in any Vermont locations, check out our site... New England Urban Exploration Unit Though, to copy and paste... | | | Unless there is some part of AMHI I am unfamiliar with, it's all basically still active. There are a couple disused buildings on campus. I've been in one of them and it was a complete waste of time. That's basically all I know about in Maine.

| | | Yes! I am based in midcoast Maine and have been looking for someone to UE with. I have been in several sites and know of or have scouted out quite a few more. I have been planning an AMHI run and know quite a bit about it. Contact me if interested!

| | | Maine is awesome. I've explored a lot throughout the State. Loring is particularly amazing. I would avoid the east end tunnels. They are still pretty heavily watched. Last time I was in them I got caught by security on my way out. They talked to me through a bullhorn and held guns on me until hasmat arrived, altogether an unsettling experience. If you are going to be around limestone, one of my favorite spots is off the railroad tracks about a mile towards Loring from the downtown park. About 150 cars in circa the 20's-60's just left in a field
A mile in the other direction is the remnants of a late 80’s demolition derby in a sand pit, only 4-5 cars, but if you have some extra time it's a little fun. [last edit 5/5/2006 4:42 AM by stolendaisies - edited 1 times]

| | | I must get up to Loring at some point this summer. It's about a 6 hour drive from where I live though, so either I'll have to leave really early in the morning, like 3 or 4, or just end up spending a night up there. With my current schedule, I'm leaning more towards the early morning! I've heard the East Base area is pretty cool, though I will take your advice and avoid the tunnels. After all, radioactive material was stored in the area, I can see why they still guard it.
I've heard some stories about this building in particular With my job, and the amount of time off I have, I'll be checking Aroostook county out a bit more... It's too bad I didn't do it when I lived closer (Bangor). Oh well!

| | | Now that's one secure-looking building if I've ever seen one, unless that door is open or there's something out back. I wouldn't mind heading up there myself.

| | | I'm new also, and one of my good friends and I have been looking into this kind of stuff lately. He has always had an attraction (for lack of better term) to abandoned buildings and the photographer, Rob Dobi, helped interest me. We both live in Maine and this Saturday night, we, along with three other friends, are going to do our very first late-night visit to some building he knows of in the Bangor area. We'll be taking a Sony video camera, and two digital cameras (a Nikon and Kodak) and whatever else our other three friends bring. I was wondering if anyone knew any places in the Bangor area that we could check out or if anyone would like to join our group at anytime, contact me.

| | | I'm very new, just joined the forums. I live directly in Presque Isle, it's probably a 45 minute drive to Loring but I think I'm going to talk some friends into doing this. I'd like to see Loring. Getting into something I'm not supposed to, is a thrill for me.
