| | | Abandoned CN Rail Spur, Bowmanville < on 4/6/2006 9:45 PM >
| | | There are two railway lines heading east of Toronto near the lakeshore. The northerly one is the SL&H line and the southerly one is controlled by CN Rail. There used to be a spur off this southerly CN line that veered north into downtown Bowmanville. The rail overpass over the 401 is located between the Waverley/57 and Liberty/14 interchanges. From there, the spur heads northeasterly until it hits about where the Sears store is then heads due north to roughly Queen Street and Ontario Street in an industrial area south of downtown Bowmanville. See map below for a rough idea of the now-demolished spur line's route. The photos are taken in and around the 401 overpass.

I've noticed that many a time and always meant to check it out on my next trip home. Thanks for the quick pics and the map.

| | | Hah. That brings up memories. I have an Aunt and Uncle who live in Bowmanville. I remember crossing those tracks along the main street of Bowmanville many times. I had always wondered why I never saw a train on that line.

The rail line in my post is actually just a little spur line off the CN line that runs south of the 401. The line that overpasses King St/Hwy 2 is still very active (as the SL&H/CPR line).

I know that overpass you speak of, that's a main CPR line... but there was a side track that crossed King St. just east of the river, right where the burger joint is... but that was probably over 20 years ago now.

| | | That's like...right by my house. There's a hole in the ground where the station used to be and where TSC now stands. Crack head haven. EDIT: We used to hang out in the valley behind that Goodyear factory too. Lots of creeks and forests and train tracks there too. There's a spot where you can walk in off Argyle Street, it never used to be fenced in so now it's a little difficult to get into. Aw childhood. | | | I was in Bowmanville just this past weekend and went to check this out. Lots of excavation work being done around there.. I suspect someone wants to build something on this site, like a houses or commercial real estate? From what I can figure out, CN abandoned this spur around year 2000, though it may not have been used for many years prior to that, I'm not sure. It used to cross Baseline Rd. W and run down Hunt St. I'm not sure if it ran down the middle of the street or along the shoulder. Last year when I was passing through this area, it looked to me like it ran closer to the south/west shoulder of the road. There was still evidence of pavement patching placed where the tracks were removed. This year, I noticed that the whole street was repaved recently, with new cement curbing added. This was probably because all the patching had made the road very rough. The link fedge had posted no longer showed the photos of the area, so here are a couple that I took when I was there.
The first 3 are of the bridge over the creek/river, close to the TSC/Sears building. The next 2 are the bridge that crosses over the 401. There's one taken under the bridge over the water, date on footings indicate that it was built in 1982. The last two show where the spur entered the Goodyear factory. The building on the left in the last photo doesn't look very used. Anyone know if this is still active?

| | | A complex of big box stores is going to be built on this site. I did a building plan review for the Rona Building Centre that will be part of this development. I'm part of the Clarington Accessibility Advisory Committee and doing building plan reviews is part of our mandate. I remember them taking up the track across Baseline. I had moved north of town so ya 2000 sounds about right for the track being removed. [last edit 4/26/2006 6:17 PM by CowboyPenner - edited 2 times]

the Tracks use to run down the North side of the street, on the shoulder. They use to run to the Goodyear plant which is still running. i lived in Bowmanville for about 20 years. recently moving, and the only trains i've seen on the tracks were the ones that repair them.

Goodyear is still very active, I live in a building where right this very second, I am looking at it. It is still used, however I have heard plans to shut it down. Many old 1800's schools in the local area are also set-up to be closed, I can't wait.

| | | On the topic of Goodyear I noticed a building through the trees while I was on a walk through the Bowmanville Valley. From it's design and aged look I'm wondering if it wasn't orignally an industrial building attached to Goodyear. It's right behind the schoolyard on Queen Street. You can see the roofline from the shool parking lot. It looks like it is now being used as a residence. The three round things up on the wall look to be part of ventillation system or something. Anyone have any further info or ideas? Here's some pics: [last edit 5/30/2006 3:50 AM by CowboyPenner - edited 2 times]

I can't confirm it's prior use, but I can confirm that it is now being used as a private residence. I have been keeping an eye on that building for a long time now. It's piqued my interest many a time.

the building was a pump house.i'm not sure if it was for the town back in the day or for goodyear.goodyear has intake pipes and a pump house up close to the dam.but the one by the dam is smaller and looks newer. the older one was abandoned in the late seventies or early eighties,i think, maybe earlier.the last time i was in it was like '98 or '99.the house beside it was abandoned at the time as well.

| | | I PMed 43rd Street and he reports that it is now a private residence which I would have guessed from the satellite dish on the roof. The owner is in the process of fixing it up. Apparently it sat abandoned for about 5 years some years ago. I can't believe no one UEed it but if you weren't looking you wouldn't notice it and it look kind of difficult to get at. They're intake pipes eh? That's interesting. I never thought about them being used for water.

| | | that place was empty for more than 5 years.my father used to head the bowmanville creek anglers association.and that building was empty befor we put the fishladder in.that was in '88.and it was empty the last time i was in it in '98 or '99.so at least ten years probably more.(not that it matters much). there is one building that goodyear doesn't use.or it may have been torn down by now.i noticed houses going up close to there not long ago.

goodyear uses the water to cool their machinery.
