UER General Elections

Hello UER members,

For almost 4 years, I have been administrating the website you now see. There have been a lot of ups and downs, problems and solutions, bad ideas and good ideas alike. We've seen new people arrive and old friends leave.

Increasingly, over the last year or so, I have found UER's politics to be interfering with my social life. I have less time for friends, less time to explore. Decisions I've had to make, which I felt were for the good of everyone on UER, have made me unpopular with some, and have broken long friendships with others.

I have decided that it is time for a big change.

Soon, there will be a UER election. You, the members of UER, the ones who make this site great, will be deciding how this site should be managed; how it should be run; how policies are created and who creates them. Will you choose to have a single president? A cabinet of individuals? The decision will be yours.

Longtime UER member Chainsaw is in charge of the election and details surrounding it. Send your ideas, concerns, and general thoughts to him via private message, or post them in this thread for discussion. He will post more details as they become available.

Once the election is over, I will be handing all decision and policy-making duties to the newly elected person/group of people. I will still be here, experimenting with new features and code tricks, but I won't be "Av, the guy in charge of UER". I'll just be Av, that guy who loves exploring power plants and wears a silly hat.

I want to thank everyone who has sent me messages of support over the past 4 years. I couldn't have done it without you.

Av, I think it's pretty big of you to hand over control of UER to the membership.

I wish you and chainsaw the best in implementing this democracy. It won't be easy!

A few notes, firstly I have no intention of making decisions or changes in how the new UER government will be elected in private. DO NOT use PM to contact me directly with your thoughts and ideas about this process, post them openly for all to see.

http://www.uer.ca/...id=1&catid=1000351

is a private board, subscribable, that I would like to use to discuss this.

Thank you.

Av, if a slate runs on a platform of "Remove the Database" and wins, will you follow such a directive?

Elections don't work. What we need is a popularity contest ala Homecoming King and Queen or maybe a rouge dictator.

I think what I meant was "Rogue" but in this case "Rouge" might be even better...

Av, I gotta say, it takes a lot of balls to do something like this considering how much time and effort you put into the site. Though knowing the differences between members on UER, this may just cause further chaos, I think you deserve a lot of respect for trying on this one.

They would have my vote!!

The LDB ruins UER and UE in general.

I don't think Av realizes that the LDB is really the biggest thorn in his side though!!

Did you see that thread about the April fools joke? Everyone was moaning, "Where is the LDB?"!!!!

It's pathetic, it really is....

I think anyone who says the LDB should be removed or that it "ruins UE" or otherwise is "negative", simply has too small of a mind to understand the purpose that the LDB serves.

There are currently over 126,695 photos in the LDB representing hundreds of thousands of hours of work. Close to 1,000 people have contributed their photos to the LDB, and close to 2,000 people have added information to the database. This represents a significant portion of the membership of this site.

Basically, if you're planning on making a lot of changes that Av doesn't agree with your "slate" should have the know-how and resources to replace him.

Av will be under no requirement to execute your policy. As a private member of this board after the election you will probably have the ability to *ask* him to do this, but don't expect him to cooperate if it's something he doesn't agree with.

As Av technically OWNS the server, code and url for UER the government that is elected will have to negotiate with him to allow access or transfer of ownership of such rights. He has agreed to enter into such negotiations with the fairly elected officials of this community.

How selfless of him. So how is this any different from the situation as it currently stands?

Because, there are still a lot of people on this board that Av DOES respect, and if we all support such a change through a free and open election he's a lot more likely to do it than through you and him taking every damn thread on this site off topic bitching about it.

If your slate is going to be all about removing the LDB you best be prepared to tell the folks in this community how your going to continue providing the other services and features of this site without Av's help, code or URL.

We don't really know, but no harm in seeing, right?

As I see it, we may elect a Prime Minister, but Av is still the governor general, and though he may be expected to sit there and do nothing, he still has the power to if necessary.

I know Av, we disagree on it!
Your LDB has watered down the hobby, plain and simple.
I know you don't think so, but maybe your mind is to small to realize the impact your site has on the hobby.

How many of those LDB entries and photos are waiting to be removed?

I don't think Chainsaw explained it very well.

The reason I am doing this is because I no longer wish to be "in charge" of the decision making for UER.

So, essentially, yes... if the elected council or president or whatever decided that something should be done (For example, deleting the 'other' board), I would do it. Of course I could still present an argument against it if I felt differently, but the council would have final say.

That said, there are of course a few simple things that I couldn't be forced to do.

For example, if the council decides that pornography is to be allowed, I would have to say "No", because that's a decision that is out of my hands.

If the council decides that I should be banned from UER, well, I'm going to have an issue with that also.

If the council decides to remove the LDB, a huge part of this site which has been an active place for information and discussion for nearly three years, and has more "UE-related" content than the forum does, I'm going to have to say that the council's decision is flawed and again refuse to do it. Why do you seek to punish those who like the LDB simply because you do not?

So, you seem to be saying that Av will still control everything as he sees fit ?

What is the point of electing anyone then, other than as a figurehead ?

Unless I misunderstand what you're saying Chainsaw ? Is the plan for the elected official/s to have actual control over policy and decision making or does anything he/she/they decide still have to be decided upon after the fact, by Av ?

It requires wisdom to understand wisdom: the music is nothing if the audience is deaf.

There are currently approximately 12 locations in the queue for deletion, most of them duplicates or locations without any photos or information whatsoever.

In such a case, while Av would not by strict definition be giving up total control of UER, he and chainsaw are seeing to the creation of an elected "council" to guide the decision-making process.

I still think that's very fair.
