Hello!

http://www.stumpra.../S-WArea/NSH1.html

Is anyone familiar with this structure? I've had some difficulty finding out how much, if any, of it is left.

I've done quite a great deal of research on psych hospitals (that's mostly what i explored back east) including nsh. It closed down in 1976 or 1977. I read a nursing thesis about the closing and the impact of it on the community, patients, and community mental health programs (which there were very few of). There's a lot of the original buildings I've heard (I want to go up there soon). I hear that there is tight security. Currently a bunch of the buildings are used for Job Corp programs/housing. There is also a chemcial dependancy program up there (I think it may be an invol. program), so I've heard of people getting chased off the property because of concerns about confidentality. I really really really want to go up there, let me know. It's interestiing b/c Ive read a ton of books on state psych hosptials but they only include the east coast and midwest, never the west coast. I really want to go but I don't know anyone here and going alone isn't too smart.

The central complex is mostly used by the Job Corp. There several "counselors" are always on site. There are a large number of high-school-age kids (16-24 years old) who live there. One of them said "People think we’re locked up here, but we can leave any time they want." The kids certainly cant walk to anywhere from there; the counselors take them to and from work. It is difficult to tell where their area began. DO NOT come up the west drive or the counselors will chase you off. I felt a bit weird about wondering into the parts the kids live in anyway. Bad form really.

Other items also on site, Northwest Organizational Maintenance Shop of the Washington State Army National Guard, North Sound Evaluation / Treatment Center (mental health), Pioneer Center North (dependency treatment for people who pay for it), and North cascades secure detox (If your looking for a job, their hiring)(not voluntary, lower income clients). These facilities do not maintain any "Campus wide" security but maintain their areas very effectively. (many cameras and fences and razor wire and guard patrols and guided hikes for their guests) They will not bother you if you are reasonably noninvasive (probably assumed I was in the job corps program). I was able to tour the entire south east side of campus without incident, but enough about the grounds.

The buildings on the main campus are either in use or "Condemned". The condemned buildings are all "haunted" and while I was their the Denny building (120,000 sqf of abandoned hospital) was habituated by a band of ghost hunters (damn my luck). While they wouldn’t let me join them (I wasn’t sure I WANTED to explore with these freaks around, who most likely do not represent most "ghost hunters") they gave me the number to the guy in charge of letting people explore these buildings. Dan Singleton (360)856-3160 (360)856-3161, Washington State Department of Somethingorother.

So the main campus was a bit of a disappointment in my eyes. I was hoping for a less active site.

But all was not lost! I knew from what I had found elsewhere the grounds were too small. A LOT too small. I started with the back roads into the hospital with the aid of my Google map. It was less than accurate and I was chased off of some gravel back roads by seriously unfriendly locals. They must have a door to door asshat salesman because everyone was wearing their’s.

Then I found the cemetery. 1487 people buried in an area the size of one house’s lot. One guy’s grave marker, an odd drain grate in the middle, and a half assed public works monument fill out the grassy expanse nicely. I think they tore down someone’s house and put the cemetery there. It is so small I don’t see how so many people could be buried there without tainting the ground water. I doubt very much this was the original site and I do not believe the bodies are actually there.

This is where things get good. Down the road was an odd parking lot in the middle of a field. I say odd because it was clearly new and well cared for.

I'm pretty sure the people are actually buried there. I read how the company that mows the lawn by accident started to remove bricks or rocks because it was too hard to mow the law. BUT these were actually the grave markers with numbers on it that corresponded to some number so that relatives could go to the actual grave site. No master record was kept saying who/what number was buried where so it's now like a mass grave. People were upset about that so they added that big marker in rememberance.

Perhaps. I read that little article as well. But most of those 1500 people must have been cremated. I am not sure the pictures accurately represent how small this lot is.

Of course, that means there is a crematorium on site. 8D

Thanks for the responses!

After my inital post, I did some more digging.

Most of the deceased patients were, in fact, cremated. So all that's under the ground there are coffee cans of ash. There was a story about some 200+ unburied cans of ashes that were left over when the hospital closed. Here's a link http://www.stumpra...metery1-Intro.html

From this same article, the crematorium was dismantled in the 50's, when a private funeral home took over the task from the hospital.

I wonder if the morgue is still there...

The morgue is no longer there. It was torn down while I was a student at Cascades Job Corps in 1996.

As for whether most of the deceased patients were cremated, there is some anecdotal evidence, at least, that some of the patients were buried in wooden boxes which had to be weighted down when they were buried because the water table is so high in the old cemetary site.

Hey, I just discovered and joined this site. Northern state is a cool little spot. I took some pictures there, not too long ago. Here is my gallery:

I did not go in the job corps area.

I heard this place was the 1st place in the US to do frontal lobectomys, and is supposed to be haunted.

Well, yes, there the facility where they have the job corps, and something else, where I'm pretty sure there is security. I didn't go over there. This is the surrounding grounds, which is actually open to the public. Some farm stuff, and some other interesting buildings. Parking on Helmic road.

Quite. Many of the smaller buildings are the most interesting. The area was a series of clearings and fields which have gone fallow and become isolated, the original paths overgrown. I headed off into the growth and discovered several buildings untouched. Be prepare for the thorn vines, but they are easily crossed with boots. This should help some.

There's a chemical dependancy treatment (pioneer north), and I believe it's an involuntary thing (aka people are forced to be there by the courts).

I haven't ventured into the hdr arena yet. I did some shadow/highlight to bring out detail in the inside of the barn, and then some selective color adjustment
