Finding the Sleeping Denizens

I'm relatively new to the art of metropolitan meddling, and so far, I've only been to locations that fall into my daily purview.

Other than driving about or strolling through my somewhat-rural and widely birthed city - are there any methods you've found suitably serviceable in finding your crawling-grounds?

Translation:

"Hi. I'm pretty new to the hobby and have only explored my immediate area."

Other than driving about or strolling through my somewhat-rural and widely birthed city - are there any methods you've found suitably serviceable in finding your crawling-grounds?

"Other than driving around my remote (but spread out) city, are there any strategies you have had success with to find new locations?"

Answer:
Though driving around is--be consensus--the most effective way of finding new locations, I would recommend that you use maps and satellite imagery to help you figure out the best region to scout by car.
Another way people uncover locations is by close historical examination for a particular area: Breweries, factories, government buildings and installations, and other similar kinds of buildings don't often go abandoned without some waves going across the area.
Google is your friend, and so are your friends: Ask people at work or friends that know your town if they've seen any interesting spots "that might be useful for a new photography project documenting abandonments."

Good luck! Explore safe and smart.
Also, mods, maybe this would me more effective/helpful in RedDevil's regional forum.

Drive around the shady part of town, the industrial/former industrial area, and on waterfronts.

Just a couple specific places you might want to try.

Yeah, just drive around your downtown, thats where the best stuff is. Try things like Google Earth, and that one EPA site to get some dirt on some factories.

Also, carry a large wrench for self defense

You can try my office in the KOM building on MTSU's campus. It's partially abandoned, and I almost assure you that you'll stumble upon a 'sleeping denizen' if it does happen to be occupied.

Ah, just kidding. Yeah, you might want to try the Mid-Atlantic board. Plenty of people from TN, and even a few of us near Murfreesboro.

I thank you for your rapid responses. It is rare, for me at least, to find a forum so tolerant of a novice's curiosity. In light of your kindness, let me shame myself in admitting that my lack of potential sites was more the failure of my perception than any shortage of abandonment in the urban complex; further, I am now vetting several potential places for an exploration.

As I gather more information about them, I will try to post pertinent information in the correct category.

If there are active explorers in your area, meet a few of them in person and earn their trust. Most will be happy to exhcange information once that happens. Over time, you can build a nice exploring network. It's happening in my area, one step at a time.

And if M'boro is where I think it is, you do have some fantastic explorers you can meet. Honorabright, Muskratwombat, and Sarabellum are all good explorers and nice to boot. Just don't expect any of them to pass out information willy-nilly! They'll want to get to know you first.

You're also welcome to come to the Spook 'n 'Splore in WV this July 22. Or to contact me or Lil-trouble if you come through western WV at another time.

But most of all, follow the suggestions others have given in this thread. Nothing substitutes for your own research.

Sorry FoxTwo. I've met those three personally, and I think it is Murfreesboro, so they're a little closer. Nor did I mention Opheliaism, or any of the rest of the Knoxville or Memphis crews.

No slight intended, I assure you!

Actually, I do pass out information willy-nilly, just not the kind anyone gives a flip about.

Fox - Murfreesboro is a desolate little strip of suburban sprawl (like my prose?) about 25 miles southeast-ish of Nashville. Sara and Muskrat live in Nashville proper, and I live in M'boro.

Please, offer me no apologies for the demeanor of your diction. My written-self hyperbolizes my personal form of expression thanks to an overzealous but well-meaning elementary school English teacher.

I had wondered, since there is no entry for my current civic stomping grounds in the openly accessible section of database, if there were any other municipal marauders in the monotonous mini-metropolis of Murfreesboro.

As to your invitation, I must humbly decline. Frankly, my finances are - or will be when I graduate - uncertain at best, but I thank you for the courteous invitation.

Welcome to UER!

If you ever find yourself in Nashville, or in M'boro and wanting a UE partner, send me a PM and we can explore together. It's exciting when someone in my area signs up, and you're a girl to boot! Sorry boys, no offense meant.

When I started to UE, it was entirely for Metro Gen in Nashville, and that's how I found UER. I once was lost, you could say. I started noticing every building I passed. "Does it look abandoned? How many cars are in the parking lot? Is there a fence?" I became... addicted. If you can avoid the flame wars, this is a very welcoming site.

My boyfriend and I go for long drives, playing a game of "Where does this road go?" That's a good way to find places.

Yeah, I've been trying for a few minutes to think of a good way to end this post with no luck. Don't post while drunk. That's about it. Though, I do hope you can make it to the WV Spook 'n' Splore. THe more people the better, ya know?

lol If you say so. I mostly don't want anyone to expect that you'd freely pass out information about abandonments (or fish and pizza places ) just because I said they should talk to you. Not that you'd have reason to, but I didn't even want to imply you would.

Oh, I wasn't apologizing. Making fun of myself perhaps, and exercizing what might be considered poetic license, but not apologizing. I'm not really embarrassed by the way I write. In fact, I write quite well when motivated to do so, albeit my word choice takes a different form than yours.

Both choices have their places. Yours tends to emphasize the potential beauty of the English language, while mine is more concerned with simple and plain communication. In my realms of study -- both of them -- simple and plain communication is rare and consequently priceless.

I enjoy reading your prose, though I would admit it might drive me crazy if everyone on here spoke the same way. It's striking and refreshing -- and a far cry from the, "OMG! did U seA thos ORBZ!!111!!111!!222333444" all too often seen on message boards. (Even this one, which tends to be a cut above most in terms of grammar.)

As to your invitation, I must humbly decline. Frankly, my finances are - or will be when I graduate - uncertain at best, but I thank you for the courteous invitation.

Understandable. If you change your mind you're still welcome to come. The price isn't bad (only $25), and if you develop a friendship with some of the other ladies near you, I bet they might have another spot in a carpool.

And before I forget, welcome to UER! There's much more to see and do once you earn the trust of others, which isn't normally too difficult. Once you become a Full Member, you'll be able to see many more things.

I think I might be the only active member in Murfreesboro. I seem to remember one or two boys popping up occasionally, but I don't know where they've gotten to.

Honestly, M'boro depresses me. We have some lovely houses, and the sprawl issue is interesting to those who care, but if I didn't count living 2 minutes from work such a high priority, I'd be gone and gone.

That being said, urban exploration isn't necessarily about finding all the "good stuff" in your area. Sometimes it's just nice to grab a friend, like Sara said, and go for a drive to a part of town you've never been to before. Grab some coffee, roll your eyes at some hipsters, take note of the ways people interact with each other in the urban setting as well as the locations. If that's not very exciting, I hear Sara starts drinking pretty early in the morning.
