| | Guideline for using the elevator < on 3/17/2006 9:18 AM >
| | | Sometimes, using the elevator in a non-conventional way can get you into a restricted floor. Elevator is a unique hazard since it is one of the very few "active" device encountered that is actually capable of physically maiming you. Do not tamper with elevators if you don't understand the workings of controls and safeties. It is about the only non-passive thing that can kill you instantly. When you decide you're ready, verify the operation of various interlocks and test it a few times before you do something potentially dangerous, so it will not move unexpectedly. If it moves while you're in it due to an automatic floor call back, someone calling it, interlock malfunction or another reason, the 1,000 lbs car and the equally heavy counterweight driven by the 50 hp motor will maul you without a mercy. Let's say you're trying to get into a basement by holding the car at 3rd floor and climbing into the shaft using a rope from the 2nd floor. If the car or counterweight comes down on you, you will either get mauled, or you will land HARD onto the cement elevator pit. Even experienced elevator mechanics gets killed while working in the shaft. Don't mess with elevators unless you are intimately familiar with their controls.
