| | | Haunted Legion! < on 3/11/2006 9:08 PM >
| | | With war veterans passing away legion membership is steadily declining. Many legions have been shutting down with lack of membership, leaving old buildings vacant. I know of a few over the years....but one near my house I've been scouting for a little bit now. At the risk of being ruined by those not so respectful or just increased traffic, I am posting this info so some of us might be able to enjoy a building with an interesting past. Especially with all the talk these days of buildings being lost… This place is actually fairly well known by some as it is reportedly haunted, and listed in several ontario-area paranormal guides/sites! The place is Branch #217 Mimico of the Royal Canadian Legion. (I will refrain from posting full address to avoid the real lamers). I dunno if anyone has checked this place before, but it was sold a couple years back and has been sitting empty for about a year now (after the Legion was formally disbanded) waiting for townhouse development. Formerly a gambling hall, this place has a good history and a vibrant ghost story! I was inside several times in the past years and heard the stories from those who (almost fondly) talked about their encounters with 'Abe', I think his name is/was, but I have not been in since it was closed. Stories about everything from hearing footsteps to lights going off and on, and even one saying he felt the ‘cold touch’ of someone from behind, but turning to find noone there! I wouldn't expect old relics to be left behind, but you never know what hidden treasures the building could contain giving its gambling/prohibition history. Not too sure if its worth it, but will post more after a little further exploration. I drove by the other day, and took a walk around but didn’t get to rattle too many doors or windows as some neighbours were around. From the initial few visits i've made its been locked up pretty good, but that doesn’t mean much!! I can't make a DB contribution as of yet....but maybe soon. Anyone else from around the Mimico, Etobicoke, High Park area as well? Or found other interesting places in the westend??

| | | I'm from the area. I've heard about that place as well. When they were doing renovations to make it into the Legion, they found bullet holes and bullets embedded into the walls in some places. How about the Legion south of Jameson (I think it's jameson, it might be Dunn) on lakeshore blvd? Is it still active?

| | | I live in the area. I went by a few months ago to rattle some doors, its pretty secure right now, but if it sits for much longer, it won't be. There are some other pretty good locations in the west end, with a cool vacant Hotel located on Lakeshore Blvd near Brown's Line. I'm not sure if its on the DB, I only have exterior photos at this point. Also, the old Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital buildings, which most are used now by Humber College, however a few are untouched since the Hospital closed in 1979. The grounds are pretty cool, and there are tunnels (big surprise) Lots of 5.0 however. New to the site, but not to UE

| | | The hotel isn't in the DB yet. Pretty secure at this point (other than the second floor open window!).

| | | I think the window is accessible if you are agile. When I was a kid, I used to peer into the vents in the basement, where you had a perfect view of the strip club stage! BTW - Regarding the legion, I forgot to mention, the ghost is "Uncle Abe" Orpen who died in 1937. He owned the place and also owned several racetracks in the area. It was a gambling hall during the depression. [last edit 3/12/2006 3:35 AM by Ry N N - edited 1 times]

| | | Yeah I found that on google about the place too. They were trying to save the building but structurally its nothing special from historical significance. So they removed all historical items and the monument out front. There was a caretaker/manager (i forget his name) that worked there, he was an old guy and would spend lots of time alone setting up or cleaning and he told me about many encounters with 'Abe'. VERY odd stuff... The old Lakeshore phsyc hospital is all long gone isn't it? i am pretty sure all the buildings are occupied now, atleast to my knowledge. Lakeshore legion around jamison is still in use i believe...or atleast used for small events and the odd reception for something i think. although havn't seen much recent activity, i don't think its going to be vacant anytime soon. Nice to see people from my area, i've been expecting to run into people wandering around in the shadows...but not always the best way to meet people hahaha There was a vacant office building on Bloor west of Runnymede library, but recently its been undergoing renovations...its too bad cause it sat empty for awhile and had easy access to the rooftop overlooking highpark and bloorwest! | | | Only two buildings haven't been renovated, and last time I checked only one of them was accessible. Also, the legion at Bloor and Islington closed recently and is now boarded up. If you're into that sort of thing then it might be worth checking out, too.

| | | The Lakeshore Psych still stands, but is used by Humber College. There are a few buildings "untouched". That Legion at Bloor and Islington is likely to be demo'ed for more TTC parking. Just up the street is the old Westwood Theatre. Anyone been in there yet?

| | | Sorry edit to previous post.....that office building was EAST of runnymede library and sat empty for quite awhile. Still somewhat assesible, but less and less every day with contruction and interior work ongoing. In regards to the area in general, I am in need of a new UE partner(s) for the next few months as my buddy took off sailing. If anyone is around and looking to meet someone new/check some of these places out...let me know!! I can rarely afford the time to get to the Toronto UE meets, which sucks...so looking for other ways to meet ppl.

| | | I know some people like reading this ghost stuff, but there's a private board for that, and ghost stories have very little (if anything) to do with UE. Please take your discussion there with others who share your enthusiasm for this stuff.

To be fair, there has been only a small mention of anything related to ghosts or the like in the thread thus far, despite the title. Otherwise, it would've been moved to Other.

I don't remember exploring it or finding a way in...... I just remember people saying they might have find a way in and then cops showed up. Or are we talking about a similar but unrelated incident?
