Read this in the paper this morning and thought some of you would like a follow up to the earlier thread.

What a sad, sad, situation.

Hopefully this one won't end in the same fate as the above.

Yeah, that chick and her friend wandered into that building a few hours after some of us had just finished exploring it.

Frankly, I think she was an idiot. On her MySpace account, she says, "I like to get drunk and fuck shit up!" or something similar. Well, at least she died doing what she did best!

By the way, there are open holes all over the floors - kind of hard to miss, unless you're stupid, drunk, and without a flashlight (See: stupid).

Sorry, I probably forgot my <sarcasm> tags.

I'm not touching this one. Already got flamed once.

I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread.

Sad, but as I said earlier...completely stupid.

I wrote a letter to the editor for the university's paper a few weeks ago...asking why no one seems to care whether or not she was drunk. Of course, they disregarded the letter, and the 20-year-old editor told me it was in poor taste.

I'm glad they ran this story...Hopefully it will prevent more stupidity, but people usually don't follow by example.

I have explored drunk quite a few times.

I would say I am an experienced drunken explorer if there is such a thing

I'm pretty choosy as to what I explore while under the influence.

Not sure about grain silos... but maybe when I was 19 or 20 I probably would have.

We had a death in 2004 in our old power station here in Melbourne. It was a homeless girl and she pretty much fell ten stories as well and the emergency services took longer to get to her because they had to don asbestos-proof suits.

It's always sad when someone dies like this because we can relate to it.

Cheers,

Doug.

Hey, there's people who want to try and hide the truth and dust it under the rug. As was what happened in that original thread about the subject.

Have the parents of the girl sued the silo owner yet?

I don't know what people who knew her best think about it, but I believe that ANYONE who is intoxicated could accidentally fall into one of those holes (having been in that same elevator complex myself and probably seen the exact hole she fell into). I'm pretty much an alcoholic, and I can imagine not seeing one of those holes and falling in, not being able to catch myself in time. I'm an experienced UEr, and still I admit the truth: "Alcohol and UE does not mix well"

Please be careful about where you explore after you've been drinking, particularly when you haven't been there before.

Sorry, just me being slightly concerned about it happening again. Take it positively.

Let's hope not...but in the age of the lawsuit, I'm sure it's not out of the question. They'll sue for not having a fence up, etc. Lame lame lame

Why the fuck should they sue? People aren't responsible for their own actions anymore. I forgot, sorry. Also I'm with Doug. I have too many things going on in my life so I combine things whenever possible. And that includes drinking and exploring. I almost fell into one of those holes at another elevator, probably because I wasn't drinking, that and not having a super bright light so the cops that patrol the area very regularly wouldn't notice a light up there. A hole looks just like a pile of garbage in low light situations. There are some places I never explore when drinking and some rarely sober. We went rappelling into a sewer after a case of beer and I was more worried about it being below 0 and my wet gloves sticking to everything topside than the beer. But I've rappelled in the dark a hundred times and it couldn't have been 40 ft. You have to know YOUR limits and are still responsible for YOUR actions if it's no beer or 20 beers. Anyone that doesn't wish to drink while exploring doesn't even have to waste the money buying it. Simple enough. And if I died doing what I enjoy, so be it. I know a few guys who would hoist one for a fallen Commando, the rest of you can laugh your asses off. But don't hold your breath waiting.

I drink gasoline for breakfeast and beer for dinner!
Any problem can be licked with a case of beer and a few sticks of dynamite.

It is pretty simple, alcohol = Lack of good judgment.
I know cus' that is how I managed to blow my right hand off, drinking and playing with large firecrackers.

Don't explore a place while intoxicated that you don't know intimately, or better yet, dont explore while intoxicated. I admit that I will go to locations that I know well and drink, but these are places I could almost walk through blindfolded.

I feel terrible for the young woman who died, and realize it quite easily could have or might be any one of us who meets that same fate. Sometimes, when drinking especially, you have to listen really hard to that little voice that tells you, " What The Fuck Are You Doing! or This Is really Not Such A Good Idea!"

I know most everyone here has good common sense.
Let this serve as a reminder to all of us to use it.

im not sure if they even could sue. there are a lot of things you have to take into consideration when that type of tort comes up. such as:
-fences
-no trespassing signs
-Whether or not the place was an attractive nuisance (swimming pools are)
-doors of the actual building
-etc
for instance: Lets say you go on vacation. you have a pool in your backyard. youve got a fence. while youre gone, some neighborhood kids decide its cool to go for a swim, so they go and swim, one kid dies. technically, their parents could sue for damages, simply because the pool is an attractive nuisance. but it all depends on the fence height, fence upkeep, etc.
but in this case, i really doubt they could sue. her being legally intoxicated has a lot to do with it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, Junkyard, Greykat, and other Mnlps folks, but I don't believe there are any fences or no trespassing signs near the building. It is huge and tall and beautiful, though. We managed to waltz right in like 4 hours before that girl who died went in, so it was easy access.

And it doesn't matter. Parents of a kid this stupid will probably sue, no matter what. You can sue for anything. I just hope they get a judge that wipes his/her ass with people like that.

Sorry, I probably forgot my <sarcasm> tags.

A lawsuit can occur regardless whether there are signs, fences, and so forth erected and prominent. It's just finding the right lawyer and getting lucky with a judge, is how they win.

There have been cases previous to this incident, including one locally, where despite numerous warnings and turn-offs, people still ventured into this abandonment - until one got hurt, that is. Then a lawsuit ocurred, and the injured (due to his ignorance of the law) won!

Go figure.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I haven't found any references to a possible lawsuit instigated by the student's family.

I was referring to a possibility. It unfortunately happens as people want to file frivolous lawsuits - especially as the courts let them.

I know, seicer. I'm not disagreeing with you in theory. I'm just pointing out that maybe others should wait on the parent bashing until, you know, they actually decide to sue, which doesn't look likely.

I realize that this girl showed very poor personal judgment, but I think each and every one of us would be fodder for the Darwin award if we had a similar accident while exploring, impaired or not.

People can sue for anything.
For instance, this crazy lady at my old job: Her husband, wrote a suicide note and threw himself in front of a moving commuter train.
She is in the process of suing Metra (commuter service) right now, because there was no fence around the tracks.
I guess there is supposed to be a fence around everything that can aid in your death...I hate people sometimes

You get experience until you get hurt, or killed; or get someone else hurt, or killed. Dude, you know it and I know it: Exploring while your judgement is impaired like that is just plain dumb.
