A plea to my fellow UERs: If you are injured, please call for help.

I know that there are consequences to being found somewhere you shouldn't be, but if you or someone with you is seriously injured, don't try to treat them yourself. Please, do NOT hesitate to call 911. It is better to be alive and in jail facing minor charges (as long as you weren't doing anything illegal), than to lay dying in a filthy, desolate place. If even minor charges. The worst I can imagine an explorer getting is a fine.

So please, just be safe and never hesitate to call for help when you need it.

I nearly lost a friend to this because he was seriously injured while exploring and decided to be a dumbass and try to crawl out. He ended up immobile and nearly died.

The ongoing plan (I think at least) we have had is if there is more then two of us one of us stays with the injured one and everyone else takes all the gear that would up the fines and charges and takes off (No point in six people getting arrested when it only really needs to be two, besides that leaves someone to give bail).. If theres just two of us, stash it somewhere untill we can get it later, but at that point thats not the major concern.. Of course if the person is very badly hurt and we can't leave them for a few min to ditch gear then I suppose I'd take the fines.. But of course that all depends on how badly the person is hurt too.. If it's something where we think we could get the person out without doing any more damage or taking a risk to that persons health then do it.. No point in taking large risks that don't get you anywhere..

That sucks about what happened to your friend. But just so you know the usual EMT crowd will not enter an abandoned building. There is a special EMT group that handles these high risk situations. So it's pretty likely cops will show up and everything but no one will go inside and they will have to call in this other group of EMTs to come get you.

A kid I explore with is an EMT and we were having this very discussion about a week ago. I was shocked that this was the practice but I understand. My advice is to find and EMT to explore with and have him bring his jump kit on every trip

If it's a matter of life and death, sure, call 911.

If it's just a major, nasty injury, like a broken leg or something - suck it up, bite your tongue to keep from screaming, and drag your bruised ass out of there.

If you call 911, you will almost certainly get a police / fire response as well as your ambulance, and you likely will get prosecuted. One of the main reasons they have security at many of these places is to prevent liability issues; you injure yourself, they're gonna wanna make sure the law places the blame on you as squarely as possible.

In addition, if you call 911 from Miskatonic State Mental Institution and have to be taken out on a stretcher, you can bet that those half-assed boards over the windows are gonna be replaced by brick and mortar; that guard that drives around every few hours is gonna be replaced by 24-hour security.

Like I said, if your life is on the line it's one thing. If not, accept that you took a risk, and deal with the consequences.

And carry superglue in your gearbag - 'cause that stuff is the shit for closing up gashes that won't stop bleeding.

You should NEVER move someone that has suffered a fall. If there is spinal cord damage, which is not always immediately apparent, you could do more damage.

The goal of first aid for a spinal injury is to keep the person in much the same position as he or she was found. Keep the person still. Place heavy towels on both sides of the neck or hold the head and neck to prevent movement.

This site has really helpful and concise first aid information.

It would also be a good idea to take some preventive measures against injuries by having a tetanus shot.

http://www.nfid.or.../tetanusadult.html

This is very interesting reading!

I recently stepped on a nail and had to really think about when I had my last tetanus shot. I was in the clear but I do plan on getting one as soon as I get my insurance at work and go for a physical. But you can get one at your local health department pretty cheap.

He ended up immobile and nearly died.

I am curious if he is paralysed now or if he was immobile from a broken leg, or had head injuries due to getting hit by something or what. I do understand that his situation is shitty regardless. My curiosity is perked.
Can you talk about what happened?

Stop bleeding and dragged yourself home/to the ER. 911 won't save you from yourself. It is your job to make sure you don't zap yourself at a site. It's bad form. Look where your walking, test the flooring, if your not sure...DON'T! People will deliberately leave manholes and floor conduits open, if the open manhole is in thick brush...don't assume anything. Calling 911 from a cesspool is always frowned upon. Ha!

Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.

absolutely, which is why I mentioned "if possible" but you're right I should have said that if someone has fallen the vic shouldn't be moved at all.

As for TDK, shut up, this is a great thread, and very useful, because I don't want to see anyone die, and if it means we can't go back to the location, so what, there will be more.

Speaking as a paramedic, I would never go into an abandoned building for a rescue w/o police. I also wouldn't go into a drain or tunnel with out the fire dept's confined space team. If you are injured you need to weigh the risks and benefits of calling 911 vs self treatment/transport. Never move a possible spinal injury unless the place where they are is on fire or filling with water. However I'd be comfortable holding my dislocated shoulder and being helped to the car, then to the ER. As long as everyone in the group is sober and 18 or older, I'd do everything possible to get your ass out before calling. If you have a minor or intoxicated person with you, they cannot make their own medical decisions. Prepare to be liable for anything you do short of calling 911 immediatly. This is why I never explore with anyone who isn't 100% in control of their own legal/medical decisions. When making your decision keep in mind there is very little medics can do for trauma other than immobilize the head neck and back, splint deformed limbs and bandage/plug any holes. A normal person with a first aid kit is almost as good as a medic when it comes to trauma. If you can safely walk out, you should do so. It is going to take the medics MUCH longer to get you out of a confined space than it will take you to do it yourself (if you can walk). Medics will call for gas meters, SCBAs, confined space kits... stuff that OSHA/NFPA/Local protocol/SOGs say we need to when going in a confined space after someone. This is going to take time and any time we go into a place like that it does endanger the rescuers. There will almost always be charges filed. Also some areas have begun billing people for certain types of large responses, and many areas' ambulances charge for transport (as little as $50 as much as $1000).

If you need help and can't or shouldn't walk or are just in over your head, by all means call 911. Just make sure you are prepared for a big production/scene, with police fire AND ambulance all responding.

That's why I carry two webbing belts and rope with me, easy to splint a broken leg. If you fall and don't get up, I'm not about to get you up, just because I know how to put somebody on a stretcher doesn't mean everybody else i'm with does, and it takes a couple of people.

Unless You've got training and are in the proccess of becoming a firefighter or medic hehe. But other than that, call for help, I agree.. I wouldn't agree that most fellow explorers would do that though, except if You are like their really good friends..
