Invisible Frontier: My review.

I originally read Jinx's NPR interview last year while bored at school. I was really jazzed about there book so when I heard it had come out, I ordered it from my local Hastings. About 5 days later they gave me a call to say it was in. I went down and paid a little over 16 dollars and headed home. I finished the book in an evening and I must say I was dissapointed.

You really don't come by that many UE books and I had really high hopes for Invisible Frontier. The first thing I noticed before I even opened the book was that they were charging me over 16 dollars for a paperback that was less than 300 pages. Thats over $22 for you Canadian folks. I could pick up a hard cover of Shakespeares plays for $12 and I doubt Invisible Frontier would prove to be such a classic work. The soft cover they used us glossy and black so any smudge your hands make is going to be clearly visible.

Enough about the physical nature of the book. Having read the entire thing cover to cover. I can honestly say it was not worth my $16. I'm not going to spoil the book for those who haven't yet read it but there adventures are great in themselves. The part that really drags down the book is the authors constant comparisons to famous figures in history, he tries to make it seem like there exploits are somehow comparible and connected. I don't have the book in front of me or I would give you direct quotes. I'm sure anyone who has already read it can back me up on that point.

Over all they seem to take themselves way too seriously for my liking. They have a strict dress code: Men wear suits and the women wear coctail dresses. They have a sort of military-esque hierarchy that they try to adhere to but it just comes off sort of childish. L.B and Lefty are both over 30 years old, you would think they would have something better today then run around calling each other agents and giving themselves and others "medals" for UEing. Another thing that really bugged me about this is when in one chapter, there going to hang the "Jinx" flag on a flagpole at the U.N. It was either Lefty or L.B get into an argument with one of Jinxs "agents" about the good of the U.N, he makes the comment that any disagreement or argument with the leaders can't be tolerated. I'm paraphrasing their but that really annoyed me. I mean whats the point of having a group or club where there isn't the free exchange of different ideas?

The book has a rather unclimactic ending and it left me with a rather bland feeling.

Having said all that I wouldn't reccomend this book to anyone unless you can find it really cheap. I would also like to hear anyones opinions who have read the book. Do you agree with me? Disagree?

Thanks.

There was a thread about this book a few weeks ago. If I remember correctly, the overall feeling was similar to yours.

Sounds pretty cheesy to me. $22? Psh.

There are, of course, very likely to be reasons that IF is $16US vs. $12 for the book on Shakespeare. One is that the Jinx book involves paying royalties to the authors where Shakespeare lapsed into public domain long ago. Another might involve the publisher. The Jinx book may have been released by a smaller publisher whose costs are higher than the producer of the Shakespeare book.
Bitching about the cost of a book relative to the cost of other books is a little silly, in my opinion.

Also, I haven't read the book and I don't know the Jinx guys so I could be way off here (and feel free to correct me if I am), but the examples you're giving of them being too "serious" all sound very tongue in cheek to me.

I'm about 75% of the way threw the book. I agree with mostly everyone else's opinion on it. I now only read the book when i'm in the bathroom.
