Hello members,

I was at Port McNicoll yesterday and took this pic. I plan on doing some photoshop with it as soon as I get my other comp. back.

It was cold, and windy. I walked across the harbour instead of walking around the cove as the water was frozen solid.(or at least I thought it was) Everything was pretty abandoned, except for this old lady who was using her "walker" and just standing, staring at the Grain elevator. I had no idea why, maybe past love, past job, thinking about the old times, I do not know. But it made for an interesting photo, and as soon as I get them developed, I will post it.

As soon as I get a full membership I will post more. Hint Hint.

I went up there in the summer, its pretty cool up there.

Did the entrance change again? I know it has changed at least twice.

Walking across the harbour, that would save so much time...... Did you get too the top of the silos? ... I couldn't make the climb, vertigo started making me freak out about half way....

Here's a lockpick. It might be handy if you, the master of unlocking, take it with you.

NO, I did not get close to the elevators, the snow was blowing to much, and was deep. I gave up on the trail that led to it. But cutting across the frozen harbour must have saved me 10 minutes. I was with my girlfriend as well, and I felt bad, she was freezing. But Ive visited the site many times in the summer, and the entrance has changed a few times on me as well.

I have never made it to the top of the silo's, but I have read the story in the archives about others who have. I would love to someday, but not bymyself. Id probably fall into one of the empty silos and never be heard of again.

I love the site though. So much history. Passenger ships, boat trains, roundhouse, and the Hogs bay trestle. The CPR had quite the railway yards there at one time. And of course it all ended, and the last train ran in 1991. Port McNicoll was also one of the last pockets of Steam engine activity which ended in 1960.

Heres some history for anyone interested-

Hey cowboypenner,

It is just east of Midland Ontario along the shores of Georgian Bay. Its about an hours drive North West of Barrie. You could take Highway 400, and get off on the highway 12 exit and go west. Eventually you will drive under what used to be the CPR wooden Hogs Bay trestle, which is gone now, but in the distance the elevators can be seen. Follow the signs that lead to Port Mcnicoll. Once you come into the town as you drive down the main street, the elevators dominate the scenery. Its kinda neat to drive into town, and see these huge silos in the distance.

Hope this helps

I can see these elevators from the deck of my cottage directly across Sturgeon Bay from Port McNicholl, between Waubaushene and Port Severn.

In the Port Severn area there's an abandoned roadside restaurant/hotel/gas station, easily visible from the 400 just south of the Port Severn exit. Not terribly large, but interesting in it's own regard. Check it out if you're in the area. I think it might be in the LDB, but I haven't checked. I'll go do that now.

It was an incredible experience, hot summer night, my wife and friends were there, we had to climb up the silos, we sat on the roof for an hour looking out accross the water. We went swimming at the beach on the way out, I have never gone back, it has been almost 4 years since that visit, maybe I'll return again soon.

I was raised in Port McNicoll and lived just a couple of blocks from the Elevator. When I was in my younger teens there was a group of us who would go into the elevators and walk around and examine things. I really wish that I had taken some pictures from inside, it was amazing and scary all at the same time. My friends and I were talking about maybe going back in, but I'm afraid of getting into trouble now.

Does anyone know what security is like there now.

When I went security was kind of... non-existant. But that was about a year ago now. Getting to the top is a bit tricky.

Hello mysti1011! Welcome to Urban Exploration!

Security at the Port McNicoll Grain Elevator is basically non-existant. Compaired to other places there are I would say it is one of the safest places (aside from the Don Valley Brickworks) to "not get caught at" in Ontario... meaning you wont get caught there, and even if you do, they will probably let you of.

Either way, a tresspassing fine isn't really that bad... its not even a criminal charge. its about as serious as a parking ticket.

I encourage you to check it out its silly fun, as they say.

Hi......... other than a rusty old sign that says no trespassing there is no security associated with the grain silos themselves. The Grain elevator is common knowledge to most people in the town and I have never heard of anybody getting into trouble for being in or around the elevators (because most people in the town have already been in there so its pretty quiet on most days). I guess if someone didn't want you in there they could call the OPP to investigate, but you can see the cops coming from across the harbour... and they dont really care either... so there will be plenty of escape time :-)...But I wouldnt expect any trouble because I have been there many times as I live 5 minutes away in midland and have family in port mcnicoll. I took some pics back in summer 2003 so check them out.....not much has changed...It really makes you feel small standing beside it!

I did a little research and also found some old pictures of the grain elevators from the 20's and 30's...Funny how busy the place used to be and now its just a small town with not much more than a few family owned variety stores and a resteraunt.

Here are some pics of the Tiffin grain elevators i used to be in alot as a kid. They were in midland at the wye river (midland is very close to port mcnicoll...almost walking distance)...unforunatly they were demolished back around 96' or 97'...They are using the original foundation however for a new condominium thats going up in the "tiffin by the bay" development.
