InsaneBunkers breaking the rules

We've been busy over at InsaneBunkers with the building of a new site format. It's a different type of site compared to what we used to have (flashy and super easy to use) but we're playing for the long run. As many of you know, we've been doing this since 2002.

It occurred to me as a webmaster that it was a drag to publish new explorations on the site. I had to open DW, modify the pages, add to a table, create thumbs, process the album with Arles,, etc etc etc.. Not whining or nothing, just trying to say that I dragged my feet sometimes while sometimes 6 or more sites were in the queue for me to publish. It became a chore when the real delight was in exploring itself.

Then, some explorers who saw and liked the site would send us pictures. These folks said that we could add these to our collection. Then we started thinking...

What if we had a site that ran itself?
Hmmm. that would be awesome. People would join the site by registering and contribute anything- dialog in the form of comments and suggestions - a virtual and friendly knowledgebase but would also include media from sites people wanted to share with the rest of the community including images, movies, sound, and (optionally) site location information.

Contributing members would literally develop and morph the site into a cool resourceful place.

Think UER's database but maybe more regional and without the UEPC (Urban Exploration Political Correctness). Sorry but we all know it's true here.

So we've added some really cool features. Recently, we have a fully functional and public forum. Trusted Members, those that are established or participatory in the UE community, are invited to view hidden sections of the forum. Trusted Members also see hidden parts of the Storage Bunker.

The Storage Bunker is basically an interactive media gallery. You can see media that the Bunker Boys have posted, you can see media that other members have posted, you yourself can contribute. Again, the medium can be still-photography, video, and audio.

Any media that YOU upload has a flag attached to your name. Wherever and however the image is used, it will be recognized as coming from you, the contributor.

Additionally, you can use the new Location Spotter feature. Take one photo out of gallery that you uploaded and assign a location. Automatically, it joins a large Google Map full of virtual pushpins indicating the place of that site. Click on the pushpin and get information about the site, where it is, and who the contributor was. Only registered members can view the location map/database.

Yes, this is a location database, much like UER's but with unprecedented detail. No, not all sites will have a pushpin. Some sites are sensitive in nature, others are public places or not worth protecting their locations. We made a decision to share these locations and make it easy (and fun) to quickly go to the Location Finder, zoom in to an area and identify the attractions. Suppose you happen to be going down to Narragansett, RI and have a quick opportunity to check somewhere out. You could use the Location Finder as a tool to find destinations if you want to visit.

Some people may consider this "whoring out” locations. I consider it community sharing without the sometimes petty protectiveness and secrecy about low-risk overexposed sites. Again, we’re not UEPC, right?

Check out what we’ve been up to. I think that you’ll find it a cool place to join, contribute, and use. Let us know what you think too.
