How big is that ship? I've watched several episodes of The Deadliest Catch. If you haven't seen it, it's a reality show about catching King Crab and Ophilio Crab in the Bering Sea north of Alaska. Good Show.

That's where the show is based. In the last episode the Maverick came back to offload 98000lbs of Ophilio Crab. Those guys are making big money for less than a weeks work but I don't think I'd be willin' to risk it.

Oddly enough, I get seasick. Never carsick, love amusement park rides hate boats go figure. One ~ her size was bringing in a codend and dipped the stern. They had an aft facing hatch open and a wave sent a wall of water deep into the ship, she sunk very quickly. Bit it is safe like being a stewardess on a plain. I hear they make good money too.

I remember watching them search for the ship. The Maverick was one of the ships in the search.

The 98000lbs was worth $169,000. The captain got $22000, the deck hands about $10,000 each. They weren't even down with the season, at the end of the episode they were heading back out with another 48hrs in the season to catch more fish.

Are you from Dutch Harbour?

What were you doing in Dutch Harbour when you got these pics?

$430,000 is one large chunk o' change! I still don't think I'd be willin' to risk my life for that kind o' money.

That reality show was somewhat inaccurate, it is indeed a dangerous fishery, but they offered a prize for the crew who caught the most crab, so the crews were taking more risks and cutting more corners on the show.

When were you in Dutch Harbor, and did you get to see any of the bunkers around there? If anyone's visiting Alaska (even the parts I'm not in), I can usually offer info and advice on exploring.

Here's a semi-abandoned fish processing boat in Juneau: http://freak.minimanga.com/boats

Turn off the internet and go play outside.
