| | Plz recommend good beginner site near Barrie or Toronto < on 2/24/2006 2:08 AM >
| | | Hi all, I missed whitby psych by like 1 month. That's when i decided i will photograph as many abandoned places as i can. But im a noob at this. I can pick locks well and am in good health and have a partner who will go exploring with me. That being said, can someone recommend a good site to see for a beginner near Toronto or preferrably Barrie, ON? I was thinking the abandoned Bay subway station. but maybe thats a little over my head for now. Need some experience!! Cheers, Happy hunting. M.

| | | http://www.uer.ca/locations/show.asp?locid=21647 this place is just outside barrie, there's a couple buildings and a barn on the site, nothing too too exciting but if you're going for photography purposes its a good spot to start. if you're interested and need driving directions just msg/email me. ps> if you live in or near barrie there are lots of places out west of barrie near collingwood & the beach. just gotta go for a nice drive one day, i bet you'll find a couple at least. ;]

| | | For sure Brickworks. And before someone goes off on a flaming rant, why not go out and look for things yourself.

| | | I was going to say the same thing. Not only good beginner site as everyone goes there and there's little if any security (though lately they've secured it... temporarily... and there's construction going on), but it's just generally awesome and photogenic. At night when people want to go there, I go grudgingly, but in the day it's absolutely beautiful, so if you're into photography... ya. Go there.

| | | If you have to pick a lock to get into somewhere then its not abandoned (Charges will be laid if you are cought). And 90% of the time, if it is a derelict place there is always another way in. just use your imagination. "I thought I heard someone calling for help inside, I went in to try and find them"

| | | Holy crap, the Brickworks are only like, a half hour walk from my house. I'm definetly checking that out (well, I can't see the DB entry, but I assume it's pretty rad!)

| | | just poking around at UE sites this morning, noted your post looking for sites around barrie. bear with me, im recalling this from memory... there is an interesting site north of barrie in the minising swamp on one of the rail trails. it is an abandoned rail station and small settlement. it is fully viewable from the trail itself, and shouldnt be too hard to find. looking at the PDF map, i think it might be the location marked "Old Settlement of Josephine". there were some stone/concrete structures on one side of the trail that have been quite overgrown (fair amount to look at), the other side of the trail had several wooden structures of questionable stability (i didnt enter them). fort willow is also in minising swamp, but the structures are not much to see anymore. they were all made of wood and are nothing but foundation and sand. north of barrie on hwy 26, there is a trestle type bridge similar to the bridge mentioned in this post. this bridge IS STILL ACTIVE AND IS BEING USED! so take caution. the bridge runs over willow creek. it can be reached from a trail that runs from the back of the Simcoe Country District Board of Education Offices (sometimes known as the "Midhurst Taj Mahal"). IIRC, the trail is behind a small utility shed on your left when you are facing the board office from the road. heres the approximate location of the board offices. just N of barrie on 26. http://maps.google...tario&ll=44.441869,-79.758596&spn=0.035849,0.095873&t=h i may be mistaken, but this location may also be accessable from Gill Road (north of midhurst, parallel to hwy 27). it would be a much longer walk SW on the train tracks. im not sure if any of the local UE people are aware of these two sites, but ive seen Asher Archive's name in here, she _might_ be able to help you out or put you in touch with some of the locals. im no longer living in that area.

Sadly, I no longer live in the area. Actually, most of the UEC folks moved away, often far away. If you're talking about the same train station that I'm thinking of it is being used for some kind of storage and has a rather scary dog living there. The trestle tracks are not something that I would suggest either given that most of the people that hang out there are 14-16 year olds getting stoned or drunk and are not worth the few moments of you life they will take up. There is, or was, a train station out side Collingwood that might be worth checking out. If you head out to Craigleith past Cranberry you can't miss it. Unless, of course, they demolished it. Har.

i cant think of any reason that one would move away from barrie..... anyways... i figured that might be the case, i think the b2600 is pretty much done as well. migrated down to toronto.

none of the buildings have any roof anymore, so i think its two different areas. i bugged my wife about this since we were out there with her parents; it is in fact the "Old Settlement of Josephine" (see the map link above). ive been there twice and theres been no cannine to speak of, its pretty out of the way for anything to be there really. just old buildings. concrete and stone on one side of the trail, wooden on the other. quite idyllic really, and easy to get to! so a good start for a beginner i would think (im more of a ghost town kinda guy).

ill take your word for it, i havent been out there in probably 15 years. [last edit 3/11/2006 10:51 PM by z0th - edited 1 times]

| | | Josephine is a great spot to start. It's easy to get to, and offers some great photo opportunities. I was just there on the weekend. (I hope to be able to add an album to the DB when I get full member status, I'm New)
In general, I think it's a good spot. Not too terribly exciting, but very cool on a nice day. Take 90 west out of barrie, turn R on Simcoe Road 28. Follow it until you go down a huge hill. After some tracks, you'll see a spot where tracks used to cross the road (they're labeled as rail trail) Park, follow tracks E about 1km, and you can't miss it. It's good stuff.
There's also an interesting train trestle where the CP rail line crosses willow creek W of barrie, near Midhurst. Look for a bridge crossing Hwy 27 towards Elmvale, and follow the tracks West. Again, not too terribly exciting, but it's still reasonably cool, if you don't mind all the pot smoking teenagers nearby. (this is how I discovered this place, by being a pot smoking teenager once)
Happy exploring!

| | | Most of the good locations have already been fully explored by the UE community but there are still some gems to be found, like say - an abandoned sanitorium near Gravenhurst. Anywho, As most of the locations are within the DB a good place is to start there. Several are restricted to full members only - side step this by looking for potential 'mysites' from local members which MAY hold gulleries of all the very cool locations in the area. Example: Copy-6, location Barrie "Mysite" - http://www.uer.ca/~copy-6/
