Hello Members, This is my first Posting. I have been with UER for a long time, and Finally decided I better earn my full member status. I included a pic I took from the basement of the former Tiffin grain elevators in Midland Ontario. I am very interested in the Midland area, and the rail lines that used to exist in the area. I model in Ho scale, and not only love UEing railway related stuff, but anything industrial related.

A brief background on the grain elevators: they were built by the grand trunk in the early 1900's, and the Cnr of course assumed control of them afterwards. There was a roundhouse, a coal chute, a water tank, and a large yard that were built along with the elevator. During the 70's and 80's with the decrease in rail traffic and the government canceling the grain rates in the late 80's, Tiffin was closed in 1990. Then torn down in 1998 to make way for homes. All thats left now is the cement basement. For how much longer, I dont know. It wont be long and homes will soon take over all of the property. I would recommend to anyone in or around Midland to visit them on the east side of the city along the water.

Im sorry I only have one pic, It will not allow me to post anything larger. Once I get full member status I promise to make a Tiffin link. Its an interesting place, reminds me of the former CPR elevators in Port McNicoll.

Take care all-furm

Cool. Is that the one at the mouth of the Wye River? I remember exploring around there as a kid and wishing I could get inside to the basement. I had to settle for looking in through the windows and fooling around in the trains instead.

The elevators at the base of Midland Harbour? This looks a lot like the Victoria Harbour elevators.

Disgruntled.

The Tiffin grain elevators where located on the east side of Midland. The harbour elevators your thinking of are at the end of King st. and still exist, and have a huge mural depicting a Indian scene on them. And the elevators you speak of at Victoria Harbour are actually at Port McNicoll. And for the time being they still exist. Although housing development has been talked about for that area as well. Tiffin seems to be a less known elevator. It was owned by the CNR. Today if you enter Midland, you must go east on Yonge Street until you reach the water. Then take a right at the stop sign on Aberdeen Bvd, and at the end of the road, the cement basement is on the shoreline. Stocco style homes now line the former rail yard. Also if you closely in the forest, the remains of the roundhouse can be found. And yes, the elevator was near the mouth of the wye river.

Heres a link to an article written by an railway author from Orillia.

http://www.canadia...ine.com/grain1.htm

I wish I could direct you to a link on the internet for a picture of what they used to look like, but none exist.

Hope this helps, take care-furm

Right. I always get Vic Harbour and Port McNicholl mixed up. I can see the elevators there from my cottage on the far side of Sturgeon Bay closer to Port Severn.

I know exactly where you mean, though I have had my eyes on the harbour elevators for a couple of years now. If they're not empty yet, they sure look like they should be, soon.

Sorry, a question a little a skew...although similar topics and something I am trying to find out.

Does anyone know the current situation with the harbour elevators in Collingwood?? I grew up in the summers in Wasaga Beach and since I've started UE'ing they've stuck as something to try...atleast I don't think they are still in use.

Anyone in the know?

furm: cool pic, hope to see more eventually. ;] i'm not too far from midland, might have to go check it out sometime.

dizcom: as far as i know, they have changed the whole harbour where the elevators are to some sort of 'heritage walk' or something like that. though i have no real idea, i'm fairly sure they are not in use, but access would most likely be a challenge. hmmm... next time i'm up that way i might have to take a stroll down the walk to see what i can see... ;]

Hey Dizcom,

I believe they really have no future plans for them. They are an Icon for the city of Collingwood, and they dont plan on tearing them down. I had heard talk of them restoring the outside and a new paint job, but as of yet, I have seen nothing done. Also the last time I checked, they were sealed tight. It would be a neat place to explore. I believe the Cnr stopped shipping grain from them in the mid 80's and the ship yards closed in approx 1985.

Hope this helps,-furm

Is anyone from the Thunder Bay area? I was just thumbin' thru some old photographs from about 1990 and came across a pic I'd taken of a group of silos across from the Fort William Rowing Club faciility. There's 3 silos on what looks to be a little island. It got me wondering what state they're in 16 years later. Anyone with any info?

I also used to go to these elevators but not the ones in midland harbour where the mural is or was.

I am thinking of the ones that used to be further north of those ones. Are these the ones you are referring to?

They were closer to Penetang than midland I think. There was the grain elevators and a small brick building north of the elevators.

They are gone and the area is as you said mostly being used for housing now.

I have some pretty cool pics of the inside I took about 10 years ago but need to scan them. I used to offroad around there quite a bit and would always stop to get some pics.

Then one day I noticed that all the dorrs on the sight had been replaced with new steel fire doors and were locked and welded shut. Before you could just walk right in.

Turns out some kid went it and cut his leg on something.

As he slept he developed a bad rash that later turned into a full blown session of FLESH EATING DISEASE. It was in the news.

He lost both legs and some of his pelvis!!!!

I stopped going there since.

You have to be very carefull any where there is an abundant supply of dried particalised feces especially rat feces it can it very rare occasions lead to some nasty diseases if led to fester.

As grain elevators are rat havens especially derelict ones there should be some caution.

Wear a dustmask, gloves, boots and good strong clothes.

I was told this by a medical pracitioner who also used to like to explore.

There is something in various forms of animal crap, that if inhaled or present when the skin is cut under special circumstances can be very dangerous.

There is something about Iron or rusty metal, combined with this that can be an issue.

I,m no doctor but I,m going to be carefull anyhow. I'd rather spend some money then risk having my skin eaten away like something from the sci fi channel.
