| | | | | | UE Careers? < on 10/9/2003 5:18 AM >
| | | I was just thinking about this recently, and wanted to get some input from everyone. In what kind of jobs would UE experience be beneficial? What kind of jobs would involve aspects of UE, or appeal to explorers? Here are a few that I've thought of to get things going: Archaeology - Involves travel, collecting information, history, etc. Search and Rescue - Access to off limits areas. CIA - Travel, information gathering, social engineering, problem solving. Courrier - Access to lots of buildings, frequent local travel. Pilot - Lots of travel with free time between flights.
"Because there's no possibility of real disaster, real risk, we're left with no chance for real salvation. Real elation. Real excitement. Joy. Discovery. Invention. The laws that keep us safe, these same laws condemn us to boredom. Without access to true chaos, we'll never have true peace. Unless everything can get worse, it won't get any better." -Chuck Palahniuk |

| | | Well, civil/structural/environmental engineers will probably get lots of opportunities in the right job... going to blighted buildings to decide if they should be rennovated or scrapped, going to Superfund sites to inspect the level of pollution, checking out a nasty old storm drain or steam tunnel, etc. If you'd like to avoid college, the physical plant at your local university might be hiring, though not sure what type of education you'd need. I know there's a couple ex-security guys around the forums; the extra access to restricted areas seems like it'd afford some opportunities. Of course, the most obvious one is a professional photographer for a photography-oriented magazine. Of course, then you actually have to be decent at photography and get picked for the right assignments. [last edit 10/9/2003 5:41 AM by Servo - edited 1 times]

| | | I had a friend that got to clean out old buildings right before they were getting demolished - strip them of anything usefull etc. That would be pretty sweet. My personal favourite though, would be ninja. Climbing, infiltrating, hitting stuff with a sword. I gotta just keep checking the classifieds for that one...

| | | I think the best career for UEers is a Security Research Job where you basically do what a hackers do for big corps. You find security holes in their actual physical security system and tell them how to fix it. I would love that job, getting paid to "break-in" (legally) into places just to test their security. How cool is that.
Why is marijuana not legal? Why is marijuana not legal? Its a natural plant that grows in the dirt. You know what's not natural, 80 year old dudes with hardons. Thats not natural, but we got pills for that. We're dedicating all our resources to keeping the old guys erect but we're puttin people in jail for smoking something that grows in the dirt. |

| | | This is an easy one: Any sort of construction worker. Doing construction work gets you into all kinds of places in buildings that no one would ever see. Not only that, but a hard-hat gives you free reign. Your foreman may not have sent you to the roof, but damn sure nobody is gonna stop you, because your going to the roof must be vital to the successful completion of this project! The only place you can't really do as you wish are some federal government buildings where they follow you around with side-arms as you work, but I suppose that's interesting enough in itself.... -ReAct
"'13.2V...' Thirteen volts. It's thirteen volts? Jesus, I could practically be made of salt water and this wouldn't hurt me." "That says '13.2kV.'" "Ohhhh... Thirteen-thousand volts... I suppose that's a little different...." |

| | | Building inspector leaps to mind. After all, you could go pretty much go to any building you want, and just wander around without fear, because if you should run into any security, at least you have a fairly good reason for being there. There's more to it than just walking around of course, but you get the idea. Security postions obviously, where else could you put your knowledge of security systems to good use? Professional photographers probably would only on occasion get to do assignments of a UE type, and probably would spend the majority of their time on other things.

| | | Urban Planning is one of the closest careers that I can think of in its relative closeness to U.E. aside from demolition. I've talked with some urban planners from the City and they have explored numerous buildings for a certain task and they get paid to do so. That's one of the reasons why I'm getting a major in it.

| | | I remember hearing a lot on the news about crop-duster (and other low-flying aircraft) pilots getting death threats and having their rides vandalized for flying over fields that Quebec's biker gangs were growing pot in. They'd plant it in the middle of a field where either the farmer didn't inspect or was somehow under their control. It would be really hard to find on the gorund, but fairly easy to spot from up above-- for some reason the Hells guys didn't like that.

| | | I was always thought about being Historian-Archaeologist. Even got acceptet to Univercity one time but in the same time got accepted on Robotics and Electronics. So desigion was hard. But I choose electronics after realizing that there will be not much jobs in H-A field. I don't think H-A is really close related to UE. I think it's just side effect of not being able to be Archeologist)

| | | I also think that Security Research would be one of the best UE related jobs. Militery would also give a lot of UE like oppertunities, both while 'on the job' and in off hours. A good friend and fellow explorer I know was in the US Navy a few years ago and told me a lot about neat stuff he saw while in port.. and a couple months ago I got an email from an explorer who was from a nearby town. he's in the marines or army and emailed me pictures of an abandoned bunker in Iraq that he and some other marines found and explored (in a ready to kill sort of way). he also gave me permission to use the pics and his account of their exploration on my site. the other marines he explored it with were also into UE, and from other states... wouldn't suprise me much if someone that reads these boards knows them
