after riding by the huge beautiful and abandoned church off dufferin and bloor everyday for the last while i decided to go in yesterday and it was amazing. no graffiti and big bright stainglass windows. took no photos but i imagine there's already a bunch the members db. going to go back in today or tomorrow with a maglight so we can get into the top of the tower that was too dark. maybe take some photos then. so for those of you who have already been in there, what's up with the double locked door at the top of the east staircase? i'm guessing squatters. anyone been in there? anyone know the story on this place more generally?

Damn, been by there many times in the past few months, never even noticed it. Actually, is it this one? If so, I shot it for Murmur in the summer, I think something about it closing down...

i dont' think it's this one. there should be a tower to the left of the door. Tall a-frame structure like this but not as steep. as soon as i finish writing this bloody paper i'm going back there with my click-click.

I was just at that one yesterday and couldn't tell whether or not it was abandoned. It's on College a block or so west of Augusta.

similar design but totally different location. the one you're talking about - i.m guessing - is on the corner of college and palmerston. its just got sold two weeks ago. soon to be condos. so not abandoned quite yet, but perhaps out of use for the moment. seems pretty tight at any rate.

the one i posted about is pretty much directly behind the Paradise theater on Bloor near Dovercourt. work is now done and i'm free to play so i'll try to pop my head in there tomorrow for some shots.

I have been past that church before...and finally decided to poke around this afternoon. Walked right in the front door, but unfortunately heard someone working upstairs. At that point my friend and I poked our heads down-stairs, then left the building to work out a game plan...at which point we were approached by a cigarette-smoking man (not of x-files fame) who told us we had to leave "'cuz its owned by a company". "Oh really, what company?" I asked. ";klasdjfsd" he muttered a bunch of stuff something like 'Ux' or 'Tux' or something like that. To which I tried to press more info from him....to no avail. I believe he was just a joe-worker from the house next door, which i think is possibly owned by the same people that bought the church. From the quick look inside I think they are restoring it and gutting the old crap.

Will be paying another visit soon, tooooooo tempting to leave alone!
Sorry for the crap pics, didn't wanna walk around with my camera hanging out.

That place looks sweet! Go for it.

Have some cred props next time you go in, hard hat, big camera (just wait), and some form of ID, say you're from the Historical Society or the head offices of what ever denomination the church belonged to (Aglican so Diosese of Toronto) to document the structure before modification.

It could work.

and then there was a ladder

that went to another ladder

which was a bell tower

which had yet another ladder to the roof that was so dodgy no one had the balls to go up it. it was basically two shorter ladders nailed together in a wonky sorta way.

That's a beautiful building inside.

As for photo posting. You need to increase the size of the images! Take a look in the "Tutorials" section, there's some help in there.

Yeah I climbed up the belfry too and was so excited to see that double ladder up to the towers roof... so I dashed up the last ladder and got about halfway up when it started to wobble and bounce pretty good! I decided to give up while it was still in one piece...the risk well out-weighed benefits for that trip!

You should make sure to read and check out all the linked info above, you can't get anymore specific than whats there already!

Enjoy, stained-glass is in perfect shape, and some amazing woodwork! Some daylight is best, be mindful for workers and the sales house next door.
Will definitely be scouting more church's soon...anyone got any ideas?

Most churches in Toronto are still active. I know that there is one that's publicly viewable in the DB as it's nothing but ruins at the moment http://www.uer.ca/locations/show.asp?locid=21809 (Christ Church - St. James). However there is lots of active churches that would be easy to scout, and go explore. There's the massive St. James Cathedral on Church St. Knox Presbyterian on Spadina. St. Michael's (don't know where that one is).

Churches for the most part can be easy to get at if the doors are unlocked, and the staff wouldn't really mind people moving through, but be respectful of anyone using the buildings. Christians have just entered the season of Lent, a holy time for us, so there may be more people using churches during the day.

Other than that, good luck and I can't wait to see the results.
