for industrial sites i wear a pair of steel toe/shank workboots i bought at the local thrift store and for everywhere else i wear vans sk8-hi sneakers because they've got a thinner flexible sole that lets you feel the contour of the ground under your feet.

in other news, anybody know where i can get a new pair of workboots on the cheap? (it's harder for me because i'm a slightly less hairy bigfoot [US size 15])

... Behind my beloved waterfall, in the little room that was hidden beneath the cave, I found it. I brushed away the dust of the years, and picked it up, holding it reverently in my hands. I had no idea what it might be, but it was beautiful...

LoL i wear vans Sk8's too for the same reason... They are dark in colour and very light not to mention a thinner sole means you can feel your footing better plus its quieter!!

Hi-Tech Magnums, the non steel toe version, lace up, side zip. they all have steel shanks, which sucks at airport security, where you have to take off your shoes for every jackleg manning the metal detector. Use what the cops use.
Side story about these boots; last time I went to Vegas, I had to take off the boots going through the airport. We had to wait for a while at five AM and decided to go outside for a smoke. After removing the boots one, I grow a brain and reach into my carry on for my running shoes to avoid the hassle again, and of course they remember me on the way back in and think it's suspicious that I switched shoes, so now I get the royal treatment " Sir, why did you switch shoes? Step aside, unbuckle your pants, e.t.c." Nonetheless, Hi-Techs have a quiet sole, but are very supportive, light, and protective.

I got your tour winner right here pussies, at least he'd crash out trying.

sorry to bring up a kinda old topic, but im in the market for new boots and I think im gonna get the Magnums, unfortanitly i cant find them in any sotres around here :\ My question is how are the soles? Allot of boots are too stiff for me. Are these kinda flexible? Or are they like big and clunky?? Can you feel while your walking?

You know, we need to get a shoe company to design us an all encompassing UE shoe: water proof, split-toes, non-slip quiet puncture resistant soles, good ankle support, in matte black with a removable camo cover. Oh and they should be free… cause, you know most of us Urban Explorers are poor.

I think magnum has "internet partners" that do serious discounts on last years models. It looked to me like PA had tons of outlets for hi-tec. you must be pretty remote.

I've been looking at these. They are made by Adidas, and cost a bit more than a pair of top of the line hiking boots. They are just about perfect, except they don't have a steel sole &/or toe. These things are quiet (rather they do not generate excess noise), good for climbing (not as good as climbing shoes or tabi, but still good) and they blend in well with non descript clothing. The only real issue here though is cost. If UE is your only hobby, or you have more $$$ than you know what to do with, then these would be a great choice. Maybe that is why I have only been looking at them and not buying =)

I infact own GSG-9's and they are very nice.... sqeaky but nice. I havent had a real chance to break them in but they work well. If you want to order some let me know I found them for 160$. Good shoes flexiable and extremely griping on almost any surface.

As was mentioned previously in this thread, Magnum boots work great. The side zip is convenient, they grip well, they're light, you can sneak in them, and running isn't a problem.

If/when I wear out my current pair of Magnums, I might try and score a pair of these:

If Heckler and Koch can build the mighty MP5, I'm sure they make a sweet pair of boots.

Foe stealth, I use leather Indian moccasins. Those are so unbelievaby quiet, but offer very very little protection.

Sometimes, you need to march right in and demand your rights, even if you don't know what your rights are, or who it is you're talking to. Then, on your way out, slam the door.

I use Tactical Footwear bought from a law enforcment website (not trying to promote, so I won't mention which one). Not only are they waterproof, but are steel-toed and have steel shanks in them so that you do not get nail punctures. Best pair of boots for UE that I have ever found. Soles are just a little bit soft for max grip while climbing and for traction.

Wishing I was Jack Dalton just to have all the cool leftovers...

Why don't you just go ahead and name them? I'm sure many of us will be interested in it even though it's piggy wear. Hell, the coppers have some nice boots.

You asked, so here it is:

I tend to spend money, because I make it (and I am not trying to an asshole), but this site is great. The more you spend, the better off you probably are.
