Finding locations through your state building commission

Has anyone tried to find locations in your area through the office of the building commissioner? If so, does this work well? I was reading the monthly reports for the Tennessee building commission at work, and I noticed that one a large part of the meeting is taken up by addressing demolition bids, many times giving the exact address like, "Demolition bid accepted for vacant residence at 123 Main St" or "Demolition bid accepted for vacant industrial building on X university campus". I found places a few times this way in Knoxville, but they have a separate office to handle the demolitions of potentially historic buildings, so the results were a little more fun. Tennessee also has an online interactive real estate map where you can look for places according to land use, using key words like 'vacant' or 'abandoned', but for me, it's incredibly hard to use. Also noticed that many private real estate agents will list vacant properties, hoping to sell the lot they're on. Anyone else like to use these types of records? Suggestions?
