GHS Tunnels?

I used to go to Garfield High School. I remember that down in the basement there were massive tunnels going quite some distance. There was cabling running down them, looked like bundles of cat5 lines, but it was severed.I only saw them twice, never got a chance to find out where they led, or their purpose. Anyone else know about these? What the heck were they for?

btw, don't worry about "entry information" in this, as I know for a fact that the janitor's office is now in a different part of the building. the renovation consisted of completely tearing down the inside, just keeping the outside shell. So even if the tunnels still are accessible, they certainly aren't through the way they were in my day.

Seattle. It's named for James A. Garfield. Mascot is Bulldog. At one point there was a petition circulated by students to license Garfield the Cat as mascot, but it didn't pan out. :/

Construction began 1902 and after many delays was completed 1912. After many more delays, it finally opened in 1920. It was expanded in 1955. The building is currently being massively renovated as part of a district-wide improvement plan. It is a land mark, so the renovation process consists of bracing the outer wall with temporary posts, tearing down the inside, and essentially building a whole new structure within the existing walls.

Jimi Hendrix went there, but was expelled for having a little too much fun in the halls if you catch my drift.

interesting features included several walled off, bricked up rooms, and an unlit, unused basement through which the aforementioned tunnels ran. The closed rooms have likely been torn down. The basement may have been filled but I do not know for sure, however I do know that it is not accessible the way it was before.

We'll see what my high school janitor has to say about this. He's super old and works at Garfield.

And the school gets renovated next year.

That school sounds really cool. I remember at the school i went to from 1st-2nd grade had a real extensive tunnel system below it. One of my teachers took the class on "TOUR" down there one day, that shit was so awsome, i forgot all about that until i read your post.

My janitor checked out. When I asked him about the stairwell, he sort of looked at me and gave this smile, like he was holding information. He denied that there were tunnels. I'll have to wander over there one of these days.

Just curious, what's the old school on Beacon Hill (15th Ave.?) that they are either renovating or razing?

Not necessarily, though I suppose millage will vary by location. If I was going to visit an old high school of mine, I'd just tell anyone who asked what I was doing that I had come by for a visit in order to better remember old times. I would even park in the visitor lot and sign in at the office.

In fact, that could work even at a high school you didn't attend. It all depends on how sharp the staff is and your acting abilities.

What are the penalties if you are caught in a school you're not a student of?

In some cities, just being inside a K-12 school without a valid cause could result in a police response and they have signs on door saying "you must check in, severe penalty blah blah blah"

That's why I suggested checking in. If you tell the secretary that you used to be a student there and are just wanting a look around for old times' sake, you might get in. If she tells you, "No," then you can just leave without getting in trouble. That, or you could go late in the evening and so avoid stalking or child molestation charges. Heh. (Er, wait. That's not actually funny.) I suppose you could even write to the principal and ask for permission.
