Abandoned Missile Silos, Chicago Tunnels

Hello. I'm new to both these forums and the hobby as well. I've always had a nagging urge to go exploring the forgotten relics of modern urban sprawl but never had partner with which to explore them. If anyone lives close to O'Hare airport, let me know.

As I understand it, back in the 50's and 60's, the US (DoD?) build hundreds of Atlas-F silos in preparation for a hot war with the Soviets. Most are supposedly abandoned now. Anyone know if there are any abandoned silos in the Great Lakes area? I'd imagine that there have to be at least a couple in WI, IL, or MI.

Also, there are supposed to be dozens of miles of unused rail tunnels beneath Chicago. Anyone know a way in?

There used to be a Nike Missile base in Orland Park, Il. but it has been filled in, and built over. The base still remains, but its just a motorpool now, and its still in use.
There also used to be one in Homewood, Illinois, which has been turned into a Park, however the Radar tower still exsists a few miles off site, you can see it from I-57 and Volmer-ish. Its now used by cellular companies and owned by some random company. But you can drive right up to it.. its huge and it has no windows.

Also, there were launch sites at montrose and burham harbors in Chicago... but there isnt much of anything left. The light towers might date back but I doubt it.

Supposedly there is still an exsisting silo in Portage, Indiana but Ive read that half of it is a paintball course now, so Im guessing many a fat 12 year old has already pissed the local police off enough to seal it up tight. It might be worth a shot though.

as for the rest of the silos in the GL area, Im sure someone else knows if they still exsist. Maybe Munster, Indiana still has its silo? Who knows.

The un-used tunnels you're talking about are probably the lil freight tunnels.
I believe you can get a tour of them, but it takes quite some time to get approval.
As there are entrances to rather important buildings within the tunnels, access is restricted and the penalties for tresspassing are (from what I've heard) quite severe.... High fines, arrest...
From what I've heard and seen, the tunnels as they are now are rather dissappointing. Just a lot of dust and rust. But if you're a tunnel lover, or railroad fan they're worth checking out.

As far as missile silos?
I'm no help there. I do know there's a Nike base nearby. Well, not nearby for us - I'm also near O'hare - but Chicago's not that big... Is it?

EDIT: Beaten^ damn.

If anyone does, I seriously doubt they would post it here!

i think that the reason there are so many of us is because of the growth around the area, and so many buidings/structures are being lost to development. i know i've been trying to get out more before they are gone...

Yeah almost everywhere I have gone to explore around chicagoland, either abandoned houses, buildings, properties, it has either recently been demolished for new development, or is in the process of being demolished and redeveloped. I just wish some of the places i went to were still around because i didnt put as much exploration into them as I wanted to.

I hear ya...
That's why I've been trying to travel out west and south more. That way if I find something worthwhile...I can take my time exploring.
Since I cover local government, it's sorta nice that I can get a heads up on anything that will be razed or abandoned for that matter.

Peace

There are exactly no Atlas F's in the area you describe. As far as hundreds, I'm sure that is an overstatement. The only silos that number in the hundreds are Minuteman, which was 1000. At the height of the cold war we had those and 3 bases of 18 each Titan II's for a total of 1054. If I remember right we're down to 500 of those with 10 being converted to PK's MX for the old timers

Here in Vernon Hills the Nike base has become the VH/Stevenson athletic fields. Everyone seems pretty intent on keeping the tower up. Here's a pic I took:
