|  | | | Hey everyone, i'd like to hear some crazy stories about people whilst exploring, rather like the one that was posted in the Water Tower thread. i think it would be an interesting thread, as i'm sure there will be lots of posting about how irresponsible some of the people were. That is if this thread takes off...i don't have any of my own to start it with.

A friend and I were exploring through an abandonment and it was just one of those foggy kinda creepy rainy nights. You know the ones that start out creepy anyway and then your mind just kind of runs away with you? We were both getting creeped out and she has a tendency to hum when she gets nervous. So before I know it after a few minutes of her humming, were both singing Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb full tilt while were going through this place. Not really all that significant until later on when we heard stories circulating that the place must be haunted because you could hear singing coming from the building late at night!
Alas...an urban legend is born!

|  | | | Well the water tower swim was pretty much the pinnacle of crazy for me, but there was one other instance that could have probably gotten me in some trouble.
Near where I grew up is a military camp, and during the 60's, part of it was used to test rocket engines:
"Air Force Plant 65
In approximately 1957, the Army transferred a portion of Camp Crowder to the Air Force for construction of a rocket engine manufacturing plant. This installation was known as Air Force Plant No. 65. Construction of Plant 65 began in approximately 1956, with operation beginning in 1956 or 1957. Besides the main manufacturing plant, construction also included an area initially used to test-fire rocket engines (now referred to as the Engine Testing Area or ETA), an area for testing components related to rocket engines (now referred to as the component testing area or CTA), and a former Camp Crowder building, initially used as a warehouse, but later used for engine overhaul and manufacturing purposes (now referred as the 900 Building).
For 16 years, starting in 1957, rocket engines for missiles such as the Atlas, Thor and Saturn were tested at Air Force Plant 65. The U.S. Air Force developed the Atlas as America's first Intercontinental Ballistic Missile. Its Cold War mission was to deter nuclear attack. The Atlas was retired from military service without ever being used, but water and soil contamination caused by cleaning the rocket engines with TCE still is present. To address the TCE contamination, sources of the contamination are being identified, soil is being removed for treatment and the groundwater is being pumped and cleaned to prevent further migration. The cleanup is being performed by the Department of Defense with oversight by the EPA and Missouri DNR.
The Engine Testing Area (ETA) was used by a U.S. Air Force contractor to test rocket engines from approximately 1956 to approximately 1967. Newly assembled rocket engines were tested in an area that consists of two bunkers equipped with rocket blast deflectors and concrete waste liquid drainage ditches (troughs) leading to a series of storage ponds. During the main period of operation, several train tanker cars of liquid rocket fuel were delivered and used per week. Operations created large quantities of waste fuels and lubricants; however, no record exists of the exact amount. After completion of the performance tests, the rockets were drained of any remaining fuel. The fuel, any lubricants that were used, TCE, methyl alcohol, hydrazine, and other waste products, were allowed to flow via concrete drainage ditches (troughs) to a hazardous waste pit and storage lagoons. After a large volume of waste liquids had accumulated, the storage lagoons were burned off. These fires created large clouds of black smoke that created concerns about air pollution and the practice was halted. After the practice of burning was stopped, waste liquids were sold to an asphalt company. Also, unknown quantities of waste TCE were sold to a chemical company for recycling. In approximately 1967, the ETA was closed and abandoned. In 1981, the lagoons were pumped dry and filled with soil."
Anyway, the area was pretty much abandoned by the time I was a lad of 15 or 16, except for a guard shack and tall fences with barbed wire. One day myself and another guy decided we would skip school and go exploring. Did we take a camera?
Heck no, we took rifles. On federal property. We thoroughly explored the blast deflectors and the control rooms next to them, as well as a building with 3 huge smokestacks, complete with an engine block sitting in the middle of the floor.
I'm not sure what the penalty would have been if we got caught, if any, but let's just say I won't be repeating that adventure either. Although occasionally I walk up to the gate and daydream...

| | | | Quite a few years ago as a young and foolish boy I was exploring an abandoned bank with a couple friends looking for a place to smoke, away from the prying eyes of adults. We soon found some spray-paint cans, as you often do in such places, and my genius friends decided to break the tops off and light them on fire in the middle of a hall.
The first few cans shot weak flames a few feet in the air. Unsatisfied by this petty show, my other friend decides to light his own fart on fire. I didn't think it would work but it seems his bowls had a high methane-content... needless to say he was in pain for a few minutes afterwards :p
Then we found a nearly full can. Once lit, this one was propelled through the rotten floorboards, and caused a few other cans to catch on fire! A rat even jumped out and scurried across the floor! We feared a security guard might have heard it, so we quickly ran out following our rat's instinct. Luckily the whole building was very damp and mossy so there was surprisingly little damage as we discovered the next day.

| | | | Can't follow the above link (no L3), but 20 years back I lived next to the old US Metals Plant in Carteret, NJ. Huge and mostly abandoned. There was a warehouse so large on the property that local street racers would run the 1/4 INSIDE. This sort of thing would attract quite the crowd on a Saturday night.

Impressive, but was there harmony? Singing while exploring is old hat, you gotta get someone who can harmonize. We had a pretty good rendition of Depeche Mode's "Enjoy the Silence" and "Policy of Truth" going the other night while in a drain. And since we were underground, it's doubtful that anyone heard us.
