It might be useful for you to use the User Search function of the left bar to see who's in your area. Then if you need to you can direct PMs (Private Messages, not blood and all of that) at people in your own area.

Wow my innocent reply turned into a post with humor of a bad taste.

1. Invest in a map. Your best bet is one of those state-by-state atlas things, I believe they cost around $12-15.

2. History lesson! Internet searching, a trip to the library, or a visit to a local historical society will help point you in the right direction. Look for industrial history, aka where was there some sort of booming industry that doesn't exist today?

3. On the map, look for towns along the railroads. Abandoned rail lines should be marked as well, and you should definitely poke around those. Also look for large areas of relative nothingness, as a lot of times the coolest abandonments will be nowhere near any sort of civilization.

4. Be prepared to do a LOT of driving. Stick to back roads, forget about interstates and main highways. Watch yourself on dirt roads though... you don't want to get stuck in some awful place in the middle of nowhere, seeking shelter from a hailstorm in dilapidated grain bins, and then be without a vehicle for eight days. Trust me. You should also be prepared to do a lot of walking, whether it be across fields or down questionable stretches of road.

Hope that helps... now get out there and come back with pictures!
