Macon Driving Range

A few days ago we stopped by what appeared to be an abandoned driving range. It turns out the property has been purchased by a local church, but so far as we can tell they only use the club building on the site. The rest they've pretty much let rot.

wow, the place looks pretty untouched. that would be prime property to redevelop back into a driving range and minigolf for some extra income for that church.

PM me if you want to get join our board and get fit!

The last time I was through there (a year or two ago) you could clearly see this from I75. It is huge! I remember when it was built we wondered if they would be able to make a go of it and had visions of law-suits from travelers! Yeah, I know, there are those huge nets. Still...!

Yep, viewable from I75 just south of Macon. On the right heading north, on the left heading south. Right below the Hartley Bridge Road exit just before (if driving north) or after (if driving south) the 175/I475 split.

For the record, I saw the bear first. Ergo, it is mine.

I'm not so sure on that date.... ever since I've seen the place it's looked ratty... which is at least 4-5 years back. I'm not sure about the church's usage of the place, though. The sign at the gate seemed old, but there were notices posted outside warning parents to supervise their children. They were paper, and while they weren't in great condition, they had to be relatively new given their condition. The main building still has power, and supposedly cctv. Also, there was a small 4 wheeler at the base of one of the stairwells that looked to be in decent condition, suggesting that the church is still active there.

So in short, I don't know when this place was first abandoned, reacquired, or even to what extent it might be in use. I have some ideas as to where to inquire though.

That place is abandoned? I saw it all the time on my way to Warner Robins and Florida. I figured something that obvious and that close to the highway had to be in use.

This site has an interesting story behind it... the original builder / owner made no money, obviously.. the site is about 7-9 years old. I used to go there, but the concept was screwed from the beginning.
The ball is automatically set from the floor on a metal tee. How stupid. Anyone who's ever played golf knows you sometimes take the tee with the ball. Well, these metal, mechanical tees don't exactly fly out when you hit them - more like your club gets a big dent or scratch in the club face. Clunnng.

We had an office party there not long after it opened. We all got very drunk and were trying to wash our balls in the ball washers they had. Har har, right? It seemed funny considering our state

When the state decided to widen Hartley Bridge Road, the bridge at this exit had to be widened first, which meant new ramps. (They are STILL working on it).
The owner got greedy and figured the state would just HAVE to buy him out because they needed his newly developed property for the new ramp in that quadrant. He held out for lots of cash from the state and also ceased taking care of his newish business, because, surely, he was about to close it when he cashed in, right?

Well, the joke was on him. The state wrangled with him for 2 years and finally he pissed off someone high-up enough that the ramp got routed AROUND his overgrown fishing net assembly and he had spent two years letting his establishment go to shit for no reason. He now owned a brand new, run-down facility.

Even worse, whoever he pissed off also found it necessary to reroute the road that lead to his grand entrance so that not only does virtually NO traffic pass by it anymore, it's a bit harder to get to now.

He gave up and closed it down. I assume he sold it to the church because he had to option left. Ha Ha. Don't be a greedy bastard.

So, as they finish up construction on that bridge, when you next exit at Hartley Bridge Road, notice how the exit ramp from the South on I-75 has an odd twist-and-turn routing to it and how much extra cash they must have spent on the drainage system in the middle of it to accommodate the bowl it made.

Now you know why ;)
