| | Abandoned school in Chattanooga < on 1/6/2006 4:04 PM >
| | | Found this school in Chattanooga last year. I have no idea if it's still there, still abandoned, or what has happened to it since then. I really wanted to go inside but it was on a major road and my friend wouldn't even step foot past the gate with me, so I stayed on the outside. I'd like to go back and take more time, if it's still there. Anyone been there more recently than me? p.s. ignore the crappy quality of the photos, my camera at the time was a pos and it was raining and I was dodging traffic to not be seen, so yeah... :/ Park Place

| | | Those are certainly some interesting photos...I haven't been there myself, nor heard of the place. Judging by the condition of the building at the time those photos were taken, there is a very good possibility that it may have been demolished by now. I guess that would depend mainly on how long it's been since your last visit.

| | | It was just last year that I was there, and I remember big fences being put up and signs and stuff which make me think they were going to renovate it... but since I haven't been back I'm not sure what happened. Do you live in Chatt? I'll probably be going soon, so I'll have to check it out.

| | | No, I live in West Virginia, I'm not even anywhere near the area. Although, as I've said before, it's seems to be of some interest. Since it's only been a year since the last time you've been there, it's very well possible that it's still standing. You've probably got a 50/50 chance of the building still standing.

| | | Sorry to bump and old topic, but... I remember that building well, i use to live just across the street from it. there are currently plants for a major renovation for the school building. however this makes people walking around and looking at the site more likely, so it's easier to get in and walk around. I went in there a couple of times, just walked in through a hole at the back of the fence. a word of caution, however. the building used to be a favorite sleeping place of the less fortunate and/or drug-addled, so behave accordingly. a flashlight is a must. anybody in chatty know how to get "underground"? that's been my quest for quite some time now. -Mr.C. | | | I went back by this place over the weekend, and it was full of workers and vehicles. However, it still looks just as abandoned and inviting as it did a year ago, it's a wonder what they do all day. I wish I lived closer so I could keep checking back, the workers have to go home at some point.

| | | just let me know whenever you want to go, i'm a 15 minute walk away from the building in question. most crews here work duing the day, i haven't checked, but the building will most likely be deserted at night. also, the proximity to a local bar (with a good music scene) gives one a more than plausible cover story for walking around it at night. | | | It looks really inviting, I would love to check it out. I live near a school like that and I have been scoping it out to get it. But it is in the middle of downtown.

| | | I'm familiar with this site. I wouldn't go in there as I would doubt that there is a secure floor or ceiling anywhere in there. Your pictures don't show it, but the steel "flying buttresses" against the lower walls are all that are keeping those bulging walls from collapsing. Some abandoned schools in that area burned, and I've heard it said that the superintendent never was in a hurry to demolish old schools as letting them get burned instead made it cheaper. Park Place never burned. The Ridge School was closed about the same time as that one, and it burned about 15 years ago.

i haven't seen any of the buttresses you've mentioned, unless they're recent. the building is being turned into apartments, so i'm pretty sure it's still safe to walk around in. however, if what you say is true, i need to get a move on and take some pics before they rip it down.

| | | I haven't lived in Chattanooga for quite some time, and I have not heard about any plans to use that building. The buttresses that I'm referring to are visible from the street, and consist of ~8" I-beams propped against the wall, welded to a strip bolted to the wall and another on the ground. Perhaps the building has been reinforced to not need them anymore if it's being remodeled, but they've been there for at least 30 years. They were added while the school was still open, which barely overlaps my lifetime. I would classify that as a dangerous place to be at any rate. It's probably been squatted for years, and It's too visible from the road for my tastes. That area probably more than gets its share of police patrol. Good luck...post pictures if you go in.

| | | yeah, it has definitely been squatted for awhile. i went in there about four years ago and ran into a couple of bums. i slicked out a few beers i'd brought along for that purpose and they were fine, but yeah, definite homeless potential in there, which i mentioned earlier.

| | | I just verified with two people in Chattanooga that the remodeling is supposed to be complete before the end of the summer. It's to become upscale condos. If you're planning an expedition, it better be soon. As it nears completion and occupancy, I'm sure that it'll become quite secure.

| | | I can't wait to see the pictures. I found out that the school has been closed since probably 1963 or so. It sat empty for a while, the Cavalier company (made Coke machines) used the building for storage. I think Cavalier went under about 10 years ago, so it again sat empty. If you could've gotten there before the renovations began, there would've been two different types of interesting artifacts inside. Judging by the pics of the outside, Cavalier must've gone to no expense to maintain the building while they used it. I don't normally think of something that's only been empty for 10 years as losing its roof. The squatters (and pop-a-squatters) have probably finished what the prolonged emptiness started. It would be cool for that to be done up nice like they did with the old Loveman's building.
