A possible expo opportunity for Ozzie UE's

I came across this article:

http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2005/12/29/1135732694087.html

It mentions WWII bases which I assume are abandoned, which makes for some interesting exploration possibilities.

If I weren't a half a world away I'd be there in an instant...

He-he, I'd have my hiking boots already on if I lived anywhere near. I'd call the fellow mentioned in the article for his personal tour, as he sounds like a very interesting chap.

If anyone down there does the tour, I'd be very interested in hearing and seeing the account of the trip.

Cheers

I went there when I was about 14 years old, I used to live in Darwin. The site is fairly well known to aviation geeks and airforce peeps - my Dad was in the Air Force based in Darwin back then. From memory the crash site isn't that interesting, not much there. As far as the bases go, there's actually quite a bit of stuff, machinery, vehicle and other parts etc spread out all over the place - although they are fairly sparce, various small buildings dotted around, water & obs towers and from memory a tunnel. The bush has reclaimed a lot of it though as expected most stuff is pretty ramshackle and in parts looks like bit of a rubbish dump. There are actually quite a few airstrips in the area and some can be seen from your car as you drive South down Stuart Hwy. Certainly worth a look but you need a 4WD (SUV) to get there (off the hwy). Would make a nice day trip if you incorporated some of the springs/watering holes to stop off for a refreshing swim that are South of Darwin. Also, if I remember correctly there a few big gun bunkers dotted around the Darwin coast.

You may think you can fly.....but you'd better not try it.
