Expect a page on Abandoned about old abandonment articles. -- LOUISVILLE -- A new non-profit ecumenical group plans to build the world's tallest statue of Jesus Christ. Louisville businessman Robert Alberhasky has founded Christ the Redeemer Foundation Inc. to pursue the project. The statue is a collaboration of local sculptor Ed Hamilton -- whose work has included a bronze statue of boxer Joe Louis in Detroit and an African-American Civil War Memorial in Washington, D.C. -- and local architect Jasper Ward. The statue will sit atop the old Waverly Hills sanitarium in southwestern Jefferson County. Alberhasky bought the property late last year. Alberhasky, who is also a minister, plans to convert the complex into an ''arts and worship center," with the 270-foot high Christ sculpture its towering centerpiece. The statue will be 150 feet tall, but it will sit atop a large metal globe attached to a four-story building. The Christ figure will have its arms extended, stretching 150 feet from fingertip to fingertip. The first phase of the worship center, including the statue, will cost $4 million. Foundation spokeswoman Janice Marks said Alberhasky will use his own money to start construction in May. Marks said contributions will be sought from churches, foundations and individuals nationwide. Fund-raising events will be announced soon, she said. But much of the cost is expected to be covered by in-kind and volunteer contributions of work from fabricators, construction workers and others. Hamilton and Ward have agreed to work at cost and for no profit. Alberhasky said he was inspired when he saw the well-known Christ statue in Rio de Janeiro. That figure is 120 feet high. Businessman Robert Alberhasky said fund-raising efforts have not produced the $3 million needed to create a 155-foot statue of Jesus atop a 60-foot globe at the site of the old Waverly Hills sanitarium in southwestern Jefferson County. His plan also included a four-story worship center with a chapel, theater and gift shop that would cost an additional $8 million to $10 million. "It would take a miracle" to get the project on track, said Alberhasky, who first announced the plans in March 19 96. "It would take a windfall from somewhere to get it going." Alberhasky, who thought the statue would lure visitors from around the world, said donations for the project have totaled just under $3,000.
