I'm a freelance writer and creative writing student looking for a few good explorers to interview for an article about alternative ways people connect with urban environments. Right now, the piece is for a creative non-fiction class I'm taking at UBC, but I'm hoping to pitch the idea to Geist or the Straight. Basically, I want to look at ways people explore their cities that aren't about tourist attractions or where to get the best latte - stuff like John Atkin's walking tours and UE. As someone who isn't an explorer, I'm wary of trying to vulture from underground subcultures... At the same time, I think some of Ninjalicious's ideas - especially stuff about encountering local environments with a sense of wonder - are pretty useful and inspiring regardless of how subversive (and risky) people want to be.
