| | | Great. WTF is a mag like fortune covering UE for? Next thing ya know we'll be seeing UE outfitters who take rich corporate execs into the NYC subways. Hope they find the 3rd rail.

| | | I clicked on the link and then clicked on continue, and it worked for me......if it doesn't for anyone else, this is what it said: High Jinx Exploring off-limits places is illegal and dangerous, but that doesn't stop these guys. FORTUNE Tuesday, June 24, 2003 By Grainger David
L.B. Deyo and David "Lefty" Leibowitz are two mostly normal guys in New York City. They're neither young nor old (they're 32), with normal jobs (web development), facing normal realities (Deyo just took the LSAT). They do not, however, have normal ambitions. In the name of their magazine, Jinx, they want to go down a dark tunnel leading to the deepest point in Manhattan. And they want to go to the top of the Empire State Building antenna. And they'd like to do both wearing suits, ties, and shades, preferably accompanied by women in cocktail dresses. Deyo and Leibowitz are "urban explorers." Jinx first came out in 1996, but they got started much earlier: At 16, they were busted on the roof of Grand Central Station in broad daylight. They've avoided capture in the "dozens, maybe over 100" adventures since. They've scaled the canopies of most of the major bridges that connect to Manhattan, rummaged through abandoned subway stations, and tromped through underground passageways such as the Croton Aqueduct. Later this month Three Rivers Press will publish their book, Invisible Frontier: Exploring the Tunnels, Ruins, and Rooftops of Hidden New York. Though most of those adventures took place in early 2001, Deyo and Leibowitz are still active, even in these security-conscious times: They last scaled the Manhattan Bridge just six months ago. "At the top, you poke your head through this manhole," says Leibowitz, who wears his sunglasses over black plastic eyeglasses. "The view is overwhelming"—he pauses—"but tunnels offer more opportunities for discovery." Deyo, meanwhile, tends to wax philosophical. "Adventure, exploration, risk taking," he says. "All organisms must have these qualities to survive and thrive. But society is built to escape these needs. It is our collective tendency to retreat. We believe it is important to challenge that response." Challenging collective societal tendencies is a long-term job. Their first and less ambitious dream is that people will stop confusing them with tour guides. Later they hope to venture abroad, maybe to Mexico City. Do they really want to risk getting caught by the Mexican police? "Urban exploration is not for everyone," says Deyo. "It is extremely dangerous and against the law, and reckless and frivolous. But to those who will not be deterred, we say to them, 'The city is waiting. Go to it.' "

| | | Wow. That was about the most stilted and pedestrian article about urbex I've ever seen. It reads like the writer wrote down a bunch of bullet points while interviewing them (or perhaps just while reading Three Rivers Press' promo material?) and then just arranged the bullets in a certain order and converted them to (barely) proper sentences. Not at all. They're not the first to interview with reporters or appear in the media.

| | | I'm with Punkboy on this one. I can think of a couple of dozen ways that publication could've been orders-of-magnitude more damaging. For a number of reasons I don't think it's necessarily a good idea to go around saying that people climb the Manhattan Bridge for sport, but what's done is done. The article wasn't exactly the literary masterpiece of the year, it's impact is almost certainly negligible. -ReAct
"'13.2V...' Thirteen volts. It's thirteen volts? Jesus, I could practically be made of salt water and this wouldn't hurt me." "That says '13.2kV.'" "Ohhhh... Thirteen-thousand volts... I suppose that's a little different...." |

| | | I don't think Lefty and L.B. tried to portray themselves as spokespersons for anyone but themselves. I agree with Kowalski that it was an inelegantly constructed article... the author didn't seem to have any desire to see anything beyond the surface quirkiness. Ninj http://www.infiltration.org

| | | i have to agree wholeheartedly with Kowalski that the article was about as pedestrian as strolling through a crosswalk... This is just something to go with an eye-catching picture as you thumb through ads... this reads more like instructions for toilet paper than an actual interview or article with any merit. BUT, this may be a good thing. Samurai
