Cool info and photos safeboy. Wow that owl show must have been a hoot! Damn scary actually. Building prone to collapse, that's got some humor to it. Like, would you get on a train if the sign said: Train prone to derail.

Here's a shot looking in the window of the Power Station. Check the dial on that Bad boy, it's jammed at 130 PSI! ?&*5# Something must have blown a valve or whatever. Hmm.

And the Caretakers dog, that thing is psychic, or psychotic, maybe both. lol.

Cheers,

A.

Indeed, I was too freaked even to get close to the sign. That whole building sways like an antenna.

Cheers

Wow 130 PSI! I dont think a 130 horsepower generator could manage that ;). Keep in mind that somebody could have switched it after the shut down.

I saw the caretakers dog once and he looked quite phycopathic, lol. He ingored me because he was too busy chasing his tail.

Cheers

I have a bunch of thos type of old valves for my projects, and they really don't just jam that way. There is still 130psi in whatever that valve is on. Be careful, I have had 3/4" ball bearing put through 1 mm thick steel with only 60-70 psi.

In addition to the collapsing sign, perhaps the owner should also add a sign about dangerous valves that will shoot ball bearings through you.

Aside from on DND property, that would be the first time I've heard of the risk of getting shot by a machine. Imagine filling out the report in Emerg... Yah, this broken furnace type thing shot me.

Seriously though, scary stuff, your projects certainly sound interesting Niv1. I took a guess it was a pressure gauge, could it be temperature? And wouldn't high temp indicate high pressure in the boiler, or other parts of the system. Here's a closer pic of the gauge.

It likely was a preasure gauge as most boilers compress the steam to pass through multiple pipes to the other building. With so many buildings, that was the most efficient way to heat all the buildings (51 in all!).

Yeah, definatly a pressure gauge. Nice range on it...I could use it...
If the gauge is just attached to that small pipe with the valve on it, the pressure is just inside the gauge if that valve is closed, so there is compressed gas only in a very small area. If the valve is open, a much larger section of the system there is pressurized.

Indeed a very nice range. I suppose with so much piping, there would have to be a lot of preasure in order to get the steam all the way through.

So I guess if I go there in a week and find it missing, I ll know who to look for ;)

The plot thickens... or is that sickens?

Sure I'm being sarcastic, why? because it's fun, in the manner of a friendly joke, and sometimes might inspire people to take another look at the foundation of their beliefs. Besides, for heritage interested types, nine times out of ten it's a David and Goliath battle. Our ammo is limited, so we're forced to (try) to use our brains.

Just last night, some local explorers and I went to check out an impressive heritage building from the late 1800's. I knew there was some controversy over whether the owners would 'see the light', and modify the building for different use. Regretfully they were blinded by greed, and the solid stately edifice I had intended to show friends, was an exploded view of vintage fine grain old growth fir sticks. This one of a kind (on the island at least, and quite possibly all of western Canada) building is now a surreal half deconstructed pile. The only good news is that they seem to be recycling the building material.

What fate awaits Tranquille? I'm not here to say that it shouldn't be redeveloped, I don't have that right. However, we all know there's good and bad redevelopment. Obviously, I hope for a strong heritage bias in the rejuvenation of this site. At the very least, get involved, voice opinions, and do some research on the heritage merit of each building before bringing in the wrecking ball and forever erasing buildings of significant historical value.

Even some buildings from the 50's to 70's are unique and worthy of preservation. Then in the 80's strip malls and plastic awnings took over, much went to hell, architecturally speaking.

Recently there was a major meeting in Kamloops regarding the Tranquille site. Here is an article from the July 12 Kamloops Daily paper titled: "Tranquille developer emerges optimistic" There's some interesting ideas going around, although I find the scale quite overwhelming. This development could work if they incorporate some of these ideas. If the project is to happen, let's hope they do it up right. Check out: tranquille.ca

Well said, Mr. A. Lien,

I too hope that if this site is to be redeveloped, the wrecking ball should not be a priority for the heritage buildings. Unfortunately, this is a problem in the province of BC.

Look at the Alexendra bridge located in the Fraser Canyon. http://www.michael...iw6alexbridge.html. The government calls this a heritage site yet they do not maintain it or even make it of any significince. It is my opinion that they are simpily waiting for an excuse to tear it down (aka unsafe conditions). I believe the same is going to happen to Tranquille. The redeveloper will look at the heritage buildings and say it is not safe or will cost too much money to rebuild. This is where all the effects of partying over the years will come in
Anyways just my 2 cents

Cheers

You may have very likely hit the nail on the head safeboy:

Your quote: "The government calls this a heritage site yet they do not maintain it or even make it of any significince."

When a building is not maintained, to even the most basic standards, this is often called 'demolition by neglect'. A sad fate for many regal buildings, and an example of corporate cowardice. That is, 'say nothing, do nothing', and maybe the fuss will go away. Then they level it, usually with as little press or notice as possible. And of course stating how it was in such terrible condition, -luckily no bricks fell on the innocent public-.

There are exceptions with publicity though, especially when a building is imploded. (Like the Kingdome in Seattle a few years ago).

Years ago I was one of many who fought to save a righteous 21 story Vancouver landmark. The offshore developers had their way, and it was imploded. Very dramatic, quick, and lots of dust.

However, some of the design style of the old building was incorporated into the new and improved? ten? stories taller building. An architectural farce? Not totally, we felt some satisfaction in seeing solid references to the old girl. Okay, I won't be coy, it was the Georgia Medical Dental building, a beautiful companion to the Art Deco Marine Building.

In my studied opinion, the new plastic building is inferior by far, however, it's more modern and likely easier to clean and heat. Wow. The heritage loss to Vancouver is immeasurable.

Let's keep close watch on Tranquille, they may still have some good expensive up hill battles, the way it should be...

Excelently put, Mr. A. Lien,

You are right. All we can do is wait. You know the old saying "Prepare for the worst and hope for the best." If the worst is to happen (aka demolition), we all should make sure that we have taken lots of pitures and video to keep Tranquille alive.

I live in the area of Kamloops, B.C., and I have always wanted to go into Padova. I tried once once with my cousin and stepbrother and sister, but we were caught, and the owner said he had to drive all the way out there from Kamloops, just to get us to leave. Naturally I felt bad, so I haven't gone back since. I was wondering if anyone reading this can tell me whether or not there is a security guard, owner, or caretaker I can contact about getting inside, because if they wouldn't do it for free, I would be more than happy to pay a fair price. If anyone has information on someone i can contact, please post the information, or e-mail it to me at [email protected] There is no possible way to explain how badly I would like to get inside. Plz, Thx.
