I'd love to see some pics. I guess I've been lazy and not exploring as much as I could be these days. but I'd love to see them.

I spent a day there once and ended up at this park with tons of machinery from some old natural gas processing plant or something, "the gasworks"? There was a little section with some pretty tall stuff that I'm pretty sure was SUPPOSED to be locked, but it wasn't when I was there ;) Pretty cool spot...

Please do. I recently moved up to Seattle from New Orleans. I'm dying to explore, but I can't seem to find anything worthwhile. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough ;)

I wish people would post pictures when they ask if they should. Chompers hasn't logged back in after December 3, the same day he started this post. WTF?
I find it hard to explore in Seattle. Not because there isn't any place to go, it’s because I think it would be much cooler to go exploring with someone else. I guess I feel more better exploring with other people.

So if you’re in Seattle and want to explore, hit me up.

Count me in. I haven't explored, or taken a single shot for that matter, since moving up from Louisiana. On a related note, here are some of my previous explorations:

I'm bored as hell on Capitol Hill.

I'd love to see some photos and hear about places you guys have explored! I've lived in and around Seattle all my life. Gasworks park was always a favorite of mine when I was a kid. They have closed off a lot of it in "recent" years. There is a whole area underneath that big covered "play area" that has a couple steel access doors. Sometimes they are unlocked. I have never been under there but will have to plan on it sometime. The whole "UE" thing is new to me and I would love to see what people have found in my hometown.

I understand there are tunnels that are used for storage in the Public Market. I think there used for storage now, but that Market sure is cool.

Gasworks park. Some machinery is painted and stuff, some was even used to make playground structures. A lot of the big stuff is untouched and closed to the public. I haven't tried but judging by the amount of vandalism it can't be very hard to access.

Certainly do the easy stuff: See Gasworks Park, maybe even take the Underground Seattle tour in Pioneer Square (mildly amusing).

Beyond those things, I haven't done any UE *in* Seattle. Always wanted to see the UW utility tunnels, but was only going to do so if escorted by Physical Plant personnel, and we never convinced them to take us down. Too much rumored security to risk it myself, IMO.

I have always wondered if anybody has ever explored the steam tunnels under the Seattle waterfront. That is, those maintained by Seattle Steam Company:

http://www.seattlesteam.com
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seattle_Steam_Company

They're privately owned, so security is probably tight. But you can scarcely visit the waterfront without seeing steam wafting from a metal grate it the road or sidewalk. The wiki says they've got 18 miles of pipes (doesn't map directly to miles of tunnels, of course, but suggests there are plenty of them!). The picture on the wiki page (link above) is of the plant directly between the Public Market and the waterfront.

One of my own personal favorites these days is what I'd call "electrical UE", that is, following power transmission right-of-ways out into the middle of nowhere, e.g., to the Echo Lake substation near the junction of Hwy 18 and I-90, but out where no public roads will take you. The nice thing about this kind of UE is that you get better-than-average exercise, and it's also pretty accessible and low-risk. Good for us old folks It's also fun to go at night and bring along flourescent tube light bulbs, which will light up in your bare hand if you're under 230kV or higher voltage lines. Makes you wonder how they can say there's no danger in living near such things! But I digress...

Vision took me on a grand tour of the Flour Mill this last weekend. Lots of fun, great location. Thanks for single-handedly reinvigorating my UE obsession.

I'll see you guys this weekend. Vision and I have a place in mind.
