| | Getting past anti-climb spikes and nets < on 11/29/2005 11:10 AM >
| | | I know this would rather defeat the point of them but there must be some way of getting rid of these things, i think the nets are to stop pigeons roosting but they prevent access to the outside of some buildings. There are some rooftops and seriously good areas that i could get to if these weren't there. I'm looking for something a bit more in depth than "find a way around them" here please.

| | | from the few types ive seen Id say it greatly depends on what style... as with anything sharp, turtleskin gloves... looks like some of the sheet style spikes could be defeated with something as simple as a block of hard styrofoam that is slightly taller than the spikes

| | | I can't help with the rolling devices, but for simple sharp barriers, and old thick doormat does great. Simply climb up, drape the mat over the spikes, and go about your business. Heavy rubber or the thick woven rope style work best.
I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread. |

| | | If its a rolling device, just throw some rope around it and tie the roller into a loop, then climb the rope.

| | | Yea the roller bar is more then likely the easiest.. as for the spikes just treat them like barbed wire.. either a heavy cloth, or something else to drape over the wall.. that and just be carefully and go slow before you put all your weight into it, since you don't know if the spikes will just go through.. Actually I wish I could find the pictures of it.. but in new orleans they did this too only it was broken bottles cemented into the top of the wall.. looked very cool in the day since all the different colored bottles and glass shards would reflect up the light.. | | | For the rollers, zip-ties/zap straps work on some kinds to tie them into one place, And most are easier than they look to climb over anyway, they're more designed to defeat the unwary who don't see they spin. The nets are probably only held on by some hooks or a few angled nails, it shouldn't be too hard to get an edge up.

| | | Some of those look... easy. I could get over them with no prob. I have too. Practice good placing of hands and feet and you should get it. But be careful. Some of the fences have these new razors. It looks sort of like a barbed wire fence but its like.. razor sharp. I have seen one around this boat place on the Harbor here. Trust me you don't want to mess with those things. Styrofoam is a good idea and if its a net possibly slice through it or try to find one of those burning laser things. I know you can get them.. I just don't know where. Persephone

| | | make yerself a chainmaille sheet.. that'll protect you from any hedge of spikes.. or just a vest and roll over the wall via your chest.. or if you don't want to make one get a stab vest or a shark suit.. which is the same thing.. *grin* and well it'd just be cool..

| | | Actually, I'd recommend the turtle skin gloves and a doormat or actually, a really thickly folded towel maybe.
Towels are what I use for barbed wire.

| | | Shaped charges applied to the wall they're mounted to Umm... I personally wouldn't fuck with some of those designs, except maybe the short spike beds. You could defeat those with some thick matting over top of them. As for the longer variety... I dunno.

| | | for the bed, I'd probably have to go with the others and say that a mat... but if you could... a wooden board would probably do really well too as long as you didn't put too much weight onto any individual part of it. or you could learn to do what the asian people who walk or lay on beds of spikes do, hehe. you could probably get one of those roll up yoga/excersise mats to use, they're basically a dime a dozen... they'd probably work as long as you didn't try and slide them accross the spikes... you would have to get the thicker kind too and not the paper thin ones. Next time I go to a sporting goods shop I can look and recommend one.

| | | Thanks, that greatly helps, yeah the ones i need to get past are the ridge ones, not the roller or spike beds, i like the carpet or stryofoam idea and i'll check out the gloves. There is another type though which are actually classed as anti-roost spikes, these are a bit different made up of large needles about 4 inches long, i'll build up an encyclopedia entry for them but there is a link here: www.flockoff.ie/fl...st.pigeon.bird.php These are screwed in so they can't be removed and they tend to be attached to vertical surfaces to stop drainpipes being climbed. I did find a way around on one of the buildings that didn't require climbing past any but the other one there is just no way. | | | The rotating spikes are easily avoided simply be stepping straight over, if you step on them, then they'll rotate and you'll get a spike driven into your shin or calf muscle faster than you can say "trespassing". Or at the least, a gorey wound. Some normal spikes are simply held on with a paste rather than bothering to cement them in, in which case if you hit them with the butt end of a torch then they'll fall off. Something that's more common in less important areas is the cementing of glass into the top of the wall.

| | | As for pictures: http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&lr=lang_en&safe=active&q=broken+glass+wall&btnG=Search But its really a simple concept. For some of these (if they're old) wear gloves and be gentle. With the new ones, carpet? It'll probably muffle the crackling sounds. Its primary use, like most things of the sort, is to look scary.
