| | | I was interviewed about dumpster diving, and I was talking about Food not Bombs, the Working Bikes bicycle collective, and Free Geek. I was completely left out of the article, which ended up being centered around one person, and because of him, they labeled dumpster divers as "socialists"! That makes me really upset. I don't trust reporters.

| | | Posted by Wabbit Other security officials around Milwaukee said they are not aware of urban explorers venturing into abandoned buildings or tunnels. "I'm really skeptical of whether this is occurring," said William Fadrowski, chairman of the Downtown Security Network Association, a group of more than 100 security directors from public and private places downtown.
|
The best part is as mentioned in the article, Fadrowski is public safety director at MSOE, which tore down their "C building" last year. I was an MSOE student at the time and numerous fellow students expressed interest in seeing the place. I have quite a few pictures because I had just gotten a digital camera that Christmas. I developed my interest in UE right under Fadrowski's nose. I guess it just means UErs in Milwaukee don't cause trouble and usually don't get caught, which is always good news.
Posted by moreebolaforyou I thought that quote was pretty funny. Also pretty funny that I was POSSIBLY in pfister and vogel last night when the article came out, and i had no idea it was out there. good thing i made it out alright. i'm sure things might be tight around there for awhile.

Unfortunately, your chances of encountering scavengers at P&V are probably better than getting busted by security or police. I don't think this article is going to improve the situation much. | | | Those pictures are awesome. Look at the mural on Schlitz! I've always wondered if that place had been abandoned for any length of time. It looks pretty interesting. Anyway, I'm just mostly concerned about P&V being under closer scrutiny. Mostly because I live close, it's an easy quick visit any time of the day basically, and it's very visually interesting for photography. I have a big project I'm working on, and I need a lot more photos. Certain other places here in Milwaukee require so much effort and time to accomplish.

Hassle free? Like before the article when Andy and another urban explorer had 7 squad cars, 3 unmarked cars, 2 police SUVs, and the TEU (SWAT team) sent after them? Of the two locations mentioned in the article, one is secure enough to keep vandals and scavengers out (but not necessarily UErs), and the other, P&V, could use a little extra security.

| | | You are right, hassle free was probably a bit extreme. My point is that they had no idea UE existed, now they do. Although I am pretty sure that UE was covered in the Homeland Security guide. See what happens, I'm sure you guys have other locations that were not mentioned. We should set up a get together, Chicago can invade Milwaukee one weekend and the cheeseheads can invade Chicago one weekend. After football season of course!! Happy New Year, Chuck

| | | did anyone find this hilarious? "If these kids are doing it, how come some al-Qaida terrorist can't be shoving fiber optic telecommunication cables in there," said Buetow, who learned of urban explorers when Hamilton was arrested. "Unfortunately we have some landlords who don't care enough to keep the buildings secure enough to keep them out." what point would there be in shoving fiber optic cables in an abandoned building... i mean its not like theyd hide a satellite uplink on the roof or something and im pretty sure terrorists have more important agendas then hiding in old tanneries in milwaukee. Plus if anything its obvious terrorists arent using fancy communications since clinton almost fired missles up bin laden's ass in 98. but with security personnel like these...

| | | The location referenced actually had relatively good security. All ground-level entrances were sealed and a guard watched the area, even walking patrols occasionally. As for fiber optic cable, if terrorists wanted to communicate in the downtown Milwaukee area, they'd pick up free wireless from a park, college, restaurant, or bar and encrypt their communications. The public internet is so much more reliable, cheaper, and easier to use. I find it more disturbing than funny how clueless the police are about terrorism. If terrorists wanted to do anything in the Milwaukee area involving fiber, they'd find a few small buildings that house DOT fiber patch panels. The DOT leases their fiber for use as Milwaukee's internet backbone, so crippling the city's communications wouldn't be difficult.

| | | Did you guys catch the "response" to this article? Some people just don't get it! I assume this is from an editorial section of the paper or something. Chuck Weekly laurels and laments From the Journal Sentinel Posted: Dec. 30, 2005 They call themselves "urban explorers," but that moniker puts an exceptionally positive spin on their activities. Really, they are trespassers on property owned by someone else and not the amateur historians or archeologists they imagine themselves to be. According to a report by the Journal Sentinel's Raquel Rutledge, they venture into deserted buildings both for the thrill of exploration and the desire to make a photographic record that they indeed visited the spot. It's an international phenomenon with local proponents, although some experts doubt that it is widespread here. Whatever the case, anyone interested in "exploring" a seemingly abandoned site should remember that someone very likely owns it. And that if it is not being used, the trespassers are putting themselves at great risk of injury for a few minutes of misbegotten thrills.

I consider myself a libertarian, so I take property rights very seriously, but I really don't understand why people should have a problem with what we do. Whoever wrote that is just making up excuses. To paraphrase Ninjalicious, people made their own fun when they were kids, why can't they now?

| | | i take offense that the media should be avoided "like the plague" seeing as i am a reporter for a local paper. i have been working on a UE story for the past several weeks, but have been very careful not to reveal locations, promote trespassing or influence taggers. i just wanted to write something about a sport that interests so many, including myself. i think that if a reporter gets assigned a story like this, without having any UE experience, that's different. but as a UE enthusiast, i know what lines not to cross. peace

But being in the media, you also know what douches a lot of your cohorts are. Sure, you're going to do a good job - but how many reporters out of the thousands in the nation do you think have your hobby? The world of un-biased, by the facts media is gone. That's why I got out of it. I personally have been mis-quoted by (of all agencies) CNN. I was made out to be a satan worshiper and almost got expelled from my high school and fired from my job. As you're the one writing the story, I'd assume you're researching it and the locations yourself. Of course you're going to keep things all DL. Someone else who "just came upon" a new site through their sources probably aren't. You can't tell me you never once leaked a juicy piece of celeb gossip to a "close, trustworthy friend". I'm suprised that you're offended by the assertion that media should be avoided. For one, I would hope you have thicker skin than that. But mostly, I would hope you can see both sides of this and realise that most reporters are out for that "infotainment", sensationlist story - even if it means not portraying UE'ers in the most positive light.

Actually I can.. But that aside the Media doesn't do anything for the good.. so why not avoid them? all they can hope to do is put UE in the spotlight which is bad because it's something that most people will never understand.. Pretty much it's a hobby you can't understand the fun in unless you partake in it.. That aside everyone always looking for "juicy gossip" which means controversy, so they shit on everyone making controversy because it sells.. In this case UE is the little guy, people always shit on the little guy..

I haven't leaked any juicy info on celebrities, unless the girl from peotone who was on American Idol last night counts. If you all hate the media so much, then don't watch the news, and when shit goes down, don't read the paper to find out what happened since we're all a bunch of secretive, manipulating jerks. Sorry to be so blunt, but do NOT lump me into a category that i don't even belong to. Have a lovely day and you can quote me on that! Peace
